Loud? Vibration? I set my coffee cup in the holder, I almost never spills. My stereo can get quite loud. Make it stop loud. Most cars don't ride as well as my truck. I took a ride in a Lincon SUV last week and asked why It ride so rough. Pee infested parking lots. I keep a spray bottle with Lysol inside my door. I spray my boots before I get in my tractor. Have a brush mounted on the step to wipe them off. Hope you find the job you need.
Finally Quit Trucking.

I have to get out of my kw sometimes to see if my reefer is running
I guess he wouldn't have liked my 10 Wheel Autocar dump truck
with the 871 and a quadbox -
better sooner than later, instead of being hooked by a certain dollar amount and being afraid to try anything else... good luck OP.

Please, don't be insulted with this. I couldn't resist. I had the same worries as you did, that was 33 years ago. Stuck it out, still here, albeit for 3 more years, and have had a pretty good career, physically, emotionally and financially. And one more thing, I started when trucks didn't drive like these oversize cars they call trucks today.

I refuse to believe the op gave trucking a chance when he sampled only a very small portion of it ... bumping docks. There are so many other aspects to trucking and this former driver tried one part of it, got a bad taste and dubs himself qualified to badmouth and dis the entire industry.
Trucking ain't pretty and serves as its own weeding process sometimes. I prefer to think of it as the industry's natural selection. I say, "C'est la vie."homeskillet, justcarhaulin, Hitman and 4 others Thank this. -
trucking has its issues but its pros as well
I dont deal with constant vibration or loud noise, tried rolling up your windows?
My truck rides smooth except when im on one of those bad roads. Also those roads it depends how much weight im hauling, sometimes a heavier load bounces me more. I would of requested another truck if you had these issues though.... -
you are going to have a rough life if you couldn't handle holding the steering wheel.

Just not cut out for trucking, that's for certain. I was just out with the hubby for a week in anticipation of actually getting back out in the seat. I was not in the driver's seat, but I didn't notice excessive noise or vibration in the truck, and ours is an older one. I saw plenty of fresh fruit in the truck stops, from bananas, apples and oranges, to containers of pineapple and melon ready to eat. It was my first time of being in a rig pulling a reefer, and the reefer didn't bother me in the least. The shippers and receivers that I was actually out of the truck at (only a couple) were very cool, and my hubby usually gets treated with respect, but then again, he doesn't give them any attitude either. Truck stop bathrooms were clean, and the few facilities I use at shippers and receivers were pretty clean too, including a potato farm! Don't know where the OP ended up during his one year, but didn't see it being that bad during the one week I was out there. As a matter of fact, I am looking forward to getting back out on the road and running teams with my hubby!

I know this is not the only industry with noise or vibration on your hands. You gave it one year, decided you didn't like it and that's what it comes down to. That happens to many people in many jobs and will happen to many more. Your post just seems a little over the top whiney. If you were tired about not being home or getting jerked around or mentally stressed out it'd be easier to understand. I've read about that here hundreds of times.
As far as noise goes walk into a factory that cuts sheet metal or steel and listen to the presses and shears running all day. Get a job where you wear an earpiece for a radio or phone and have one person whisper so you turn the volume up and the next moron screams in your ear because they can't hear for crap so they think no one else can either. There are people that sit typing on a computer all day and wind up with carpal tunnel. There's many occupations that put far greater stress on your hands and wrists than trucking. You want to talk about sore hands or wrists go be a meat cutter or one of the many physically demanding jobs. There's tougher careers physically than trucking I'm sure of it. Some of your other concerns are valid from what I've read though. HOS regs.
If I do try this job and don't care for it, I doubt I'll come on here and say it's too hard on my hands or noisy. I've had jobs that were physically demanding and worked in noisy environments before. Feed mill, farm coop, factory work etc. I wish you the best though it sounds like you found something you like better anyway.camaro68 Thanks this.
