Owner Operator Tasks List

    For a school project, I need to figure out what is it that O/Os do, aside from drive a truck of course. I've been looking around this forum and came up with the following list of tasks that O/O have to do beyond just driving a truck. Please add to this list or make corrections.
    ⁃ Taxes
    ⁃ Find Loads
    ⁃ Maintenance
    ⁃ Insurance
    ⁃ Permits/forms
    ⁃ IFTA
    ⁃ Accounting
    ⁃ Billing and collections

    Am I missing anything?

    may want to add "business owner" to that list too.

    We are not anything close to being a "truck driver". Driving that truck is only about 15% of the job.

    You have Regulations compliance, safety Director, HOS compliance as well in that mix.

    Also don't forget the fact that most O/Ops do there own maintenance. Grease the truck, change the oil, little things here and there to keep the truck "well Oiled".

    if you plan your operations, determine a reasonable net profit and what the value of your services are worth.

    In our case, we are a service provider. As a company truck driver, you do not have any of the responsibility to determine the day to day business operations as an o/o would.

    As a lease operator, it would depend on how much you can determine your actual operation. If you cannot decline a load, it becomes a grey area (IMO)

    The more autonomous you become, the more of a business owner you are. You are responsible for AR/AP, licensing and daily operation.

    It is likely that the actual performance of the primary service (in our case, driving a truck and picking up/delivering freight) is only a small portion of your job duties combined.
