if you have a generator that is too small to run the air conditioner it will also be too small to provide enough charging amps to keep the batterys charged as it will draw more from the batterys (power loss threw inverter) than it would plugged directly into the generator.

also if a 2k watt generator wont run the ac a 1500 watt inverter would not ether. if the problem is only surge amps when the compressor came on you may be able to use the battery to soak up the surge amps as long as the generator/charger can run above the cont. amp draw. and the inverter would have to be big enough to hanlde the surge amps. although this would be a very inefficient setup and i don't imagine the charger/inverter lasting long under such constant strain.

and to the poster that said it dosen't work to plug a battery charger from a inverter back to the battery, so you realize that by doing that your creating a draw on the battery not charging them. because of efficiency loss threw the inverter and the charger if that somehow was able to pull extra engery from no where and put it in the battery id have battery's inverters and chargers allover my house and eliminate my engery bills...lol

think of batterys as a water tank. you have hoses running to each one of the things you got running off of them, but each thing you hook to them leaks a little bit so if you try running your hose to two leaking things back into the top of the tank your your still draining the tank.

you have to have somthing filling your water tank as fast as it goes down to keep them full otherwise it will go empty. but if you turn off all your hoses the water tank stays full without anything filling it.

using the same concept if you have somthing that uses alot of water for a very short period of time. you can use a lot of water at once and then slowly fill the tank back up for the next use(what battery were made for ie starting the truck)

I have a 3500 watt Champion generator on catwalk. It cost me $350 roughly at Camping World. I run a 13000 btu portable ac with this all night without adding gas. Have gotten 2+ years out of it. No mixing fuel.

Look in to hard start capacitors for you A/C unit. you may find the starting problems are due to the surge time limit of the inverter.
