Good info, was definitely planning on bringing a mechanic with me if I ever had a purchase in mind.
You say an engine 'overhaul' will probably be needed shortly after 1mil mile mark. Are we referring to the engine being completely rebuilt? Or just a major tune up?
Rig dig report? Will take a look ... was actually gonna ask if there was a carfax for trucks haha.
I'm guessing the motors with the cheapest repair bills are detroits and cummins? Or are they all pretty equivalent.
Thx.
Are they serious?

I know you get what you pay for but I have myself been looking at 05 to 07 sleepers (9200i's mainly but also forst year Prostars with a ISX) I am seeing them for $20k to $50k

Overhaul is a vague term that basically means the motor is rebuilt. The cost can vary from as little as $5K to $30K depending on what components are replaced/rebuilt. Like somebody said, if an ad says "recent overhaul" unless they have documentation, it never happened. Documentation would be an invoice showing exactly what work was performed. If it was done by Cummins, Cat, Detroit, etc - Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner or other dealer the invoice will detail specifically what was done step by step - either a basic inframe or more extensive like radiator was replaced, turbo replaced, air compressor rebuilt etc, etc. If it was done under a shade tree you have to trust based off available receipts, if they have them, that the guy knew what he was doing......... even some independent shops might not document very well... in those cases you're taking a huge risk and that's why the best policy would be "it never really happened" - so either the price reflects that as in "cheap truck" or you walk away from something with a questionable "overhaul".

IF NO california, then columbia glider, 12.7/10/3.55 for a $100k, will get the best mpg you could probally ever get with a rig and less worries.

One other thing--I haven't seen mentioned when buyin used--How long has the truck been sitting? One of the worst things you can do to any type of machinery--is NOT USE IT--lots of problems seem to creep up..

That is especially true on the sitting part.
