I am jumping back in to driving after a 3 year hiatus working for a non-profit (long enough for the kids to get past childcare age). During my physical the doc told me next year DOT is going to crack down on driver weight (using their "body mass index" we all fit into of course) and if I gain weight I could be denied my medical card next year. If that is true that is sure to cause waves among an industry of guys who sit for 10 hours a day and are not known for their "truck driver abs." Even though I am not way off the scale (pun intended) and I have actually lost some weight just by eating better, I know I need to do more. Does anyone have any good exercise ideas for truckers? I love to walk, but you can't always leave the truck or find a safe place for a stroll. I think I need to invent a cab-sized treadmill; I'll make millions, especially next year.

I walk when I can. Your right in that not all places are a good place for walking. Some people bring bikes to ride, however I see even fewer places to ride those. Most company terminals are big and safe enough for walking. Even some shipper/recievers dont mine if you get out and walk around. It's not a lot but it helps, if nothing more than to just get out of the truck.

I decided to lose weight back in 2008. I cut my diet to 1400 healthy calories per day and started walking the perimeter of what ever truckstop I was at for the night. I went from 277 lbs to 194lbs in about seven months. Never felt better. It was kind of fun to see all the fat guys sitting at their seats stuffing cheeseburgers and fries into their mouths and saying to me, "I got to start walking".
Some tips:
Cut out soda completely. I may have one per month now if that.
Drink lots of water. It helps you feel full.
Vegetables have very few calories so you can load up on them and eat reasonable portions of meat and starch.
The more you exercise the better you feel and the more you exercise.
Breakfast is very important. I eat two hard boiled eggs, greek yogurt, and a glass of milk each morning. The protein is important to get your metabolism up.
Don't ever skip a meal. Your body stores fat if you don't feed it on a regular schedule.
It is perfectly fine to have some sweets. Don't deny yourself because you will resent the diet. Just keep it small.
Once a week splurge a little and have a slice of pizza or something you love and the change in your lifestyle will be an easy transition.daddyhusky, NewNashGuy, Twicebit and 3 others Thank this. -

How is DOT going to crack down on trucker fitness?
What will be considered an unhealthy weight ? -

Does'nt matter how much walking you do it won't do any good if you overeat, you're defeating the purpose. You may not be able to exercise everyday while on the road but if you watch what you eat and eat healthy you can lose weight and still stay fit.

Is Doc starting to spread rumors ?
When it's in black and white,
and a formal regulation,
then we'll know the details.
