The Smith System

I would like to ask the experienced drivers here,

Have you heard of the Smith system? Has it helped you in any way? Have there been any changes in your driving style since you started learning it? Do you feel there are any downsides to it? It's said to cut back on the fuel cost, and to not over work the engine as much -- therefore reducing maintenance fees as well. Many companies require it of all of their drivers, to learn and pass a Smith System course.

 

I had Smith System training back about 2000. I still use it, keep your escape zones in mind. Don't rush up into the bunches of cars, stay between the bunches, control that escape zone in front of you first and the ones to the right and left as much as you can.

I've had all kinds of safety training over the years, but Smith System still stands out as the most practical and complete method of reducing your liability and risk while driving.

It's true what the instructors say too. I've seen cars weaving in and out of traffic, taking all kinds of risks, and they don't get much further ahead than me sitting back working the Smith System nice and easy and nearly risk-free !

 

The Smith works just fine if your co-driver is not standing up in the sleeper, with his D _ _ K in a bottle when thing go wrong in a moving truck. Just saying ! but the Smith System does work very well !!!

 

Smith System: some of the best training you can get. I use it. Follow the Smith System and it will help you stay safe.

 

"Aim High in Steering" and "Leave Yourself an Out" are the two biggest Smith System keys that have helped me. Definitely improves safety as well as fuel economy!

 

Yes sir, had it myself and works if you use it. Better than any Keller product.

I was part of a group that did a study on why..........

On one hand, we pay a driver commissions, piece work, mileage to get him to hustle. We pay him low to make sure he comes back....cold and hungry.

THEN

We have poor fuel mileage, incidents, accidents and turnover because he has the burner on all the time trying to make a living inside the parameters we set up.

Hmmmmmm....... It's been a tough one for motor carrier mgmt to wrestle to the ground......they don't see themselves as creating the problem in the first place.......well nevermind, just order more Keller videos.

Keep yours eyes moving and leave yourself an out have saved my rear numerous times I honestly use it.

 

It's one of the best tools that any driver , and I mean anyone who drives anything can utilize. I just recently retired and I was fortunate enough to do it with an accident free record. The Smith system is really all about taking a common sense approach to driving , using a great deal of patience for the other drivers you come into contact with , and being proactive, instead of Reactive. Like most things in life your own attitude can cause you lots of grief, or give you lots of happiness, and keep you and others that you share the roads with safe.

The purpose of the smith system is to change you driving style, so if you say it didn't change anything, then you need a refresher.

Yes, it does cut back on fuel and maintenance costs. I'll point out to "Aim High in Steering". Aim High in Steering means to look further down the road instead of focusing your attention solely on the vehicle in front of you. Although it's main purpose is to keep you centered in the lane without seesawing the wheel, you also can react to obstructions sooner than you normally would not using the smith system, reducing the wear and tear on your brakes.
