theyre for reading license plates every plate they pass by is scanned and ran thru a database and if the car plate comes up as missing or stolen or if has a BOLO on it will alert the cop so he can pull over the vehicle. some repo agency's are even using the system now i forget the name of the system

In Northern California multiple law enforcement agencies have banded together to stor and share the data. They know where you were and when you were there. http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/License-plate-readers-tracking-cars-4622476.php
That faint sound in the distance is George Orwell spinning in his grave. -
There's a guy leading a push to have them banned or restricted. He did a FOIA request on himself and the local PD had 2 years worth of data on him alone. over 215 records of where he had been. And he NEVER did anything illegal.
I can see them scanning and if it comes back clean, it's dumped after 24 hours. But to retain a record for two years....uh, no..... -
I've seen these scattered all over the place coming into Memphis headed towards W. Memphis on state, local and unmarked cars and SUV's.

some of the repo places in st louis have them mounted on the trucks and cruise through the mall parking lots getting cars. ive seen it in action while still towing it goes through an entire mall lot as fast as you can drive it

Yea it's insane technology it's really setting the bar higher in the repo industry expensive but worth it the companies that have it are pretty much banding together and forming one huge database
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Kinda scary to think a "private" towing company can keep tabs on where you have been....I see more bad than good with these things and personally don't like them
Chinatown and silver dollar Thank this. -
Edward Snowden revealed that you are tracked simply by driving by any wifi. Look how many wifi's are around so it's easy to track you any time day or night. Cars & trucks are filled with computers of one kind or another. If you have On-Star your private conversations in your vehicle can be monitored.
Boardhauler Thanks this.
