As everyone else said, unless you have something lined up I would wait. Use this time to do research and put together a hard plan on what you want out of this.

I vote to wait a while.

Traditionally the winter months are the slowest part of the year for trucking in general. I think it has alot to do with people over extending themselves on credit for Christmas purchases and they need to buckle down for a while and pay those debts off before buying more stuff consequently we get a big slow down (just my observations over the years).

I am a company driver and have seen a big drop in my earnings mainly due to the current recession (I think we are in it rather than on the brink of it). To become an o/o in this environment would be quite an undertaking and, with the economy the way it is, stacked against you.

My $.02 wait, especially with the economy on the brink of recession.

Election yrs always make the economy look like its in a slow down too.

If we are not in recession we are definitely in a "market correction". You cannot maintain the frenzied pace and hotness of the last few yrs forever.

What type of trailer/freight do you want to haul. Flat beds to a certain degree depend on the real estate market, lumber, constuction equipment, pipe. I pull a reefer because I figure economy good or bad people need to eat. A vented dry van can be used to haul certain produce, melons and potatoes. I have even seen potatoes and onions hauled on flatbeds. roduce season begins late March- April so I would try to be on the road by April in order to take advantage of more favorable rates. It will take about a month give or take to file paperwork and get on road if you plan on running your own authority.

The USDA puts out a reort about in season produce, truck availability, going rate on their website. I will put the link in my next post because this website wont let me do it until I have 20 or more posts.

Why make such a Big jump and buy a truck and trailer. If you are a company driver you should and do need to have this all figured out. If you are New go learn on someone els dime be a company driver for a few years.
    Best of luck
