We are a family owned company that uses our flatbed (26 foot) truck to deliver and pick up material.
We have gotten our wide load permit and my question is, we have the cloth straps.. at what point is it illegal and would need to use chains? For both wide load and just a normal load is there a law on when we need to use chains over straps? our loads never exceed 16,000lbs
Thanks in Advance

Depends on the product you are hauling. Sharp edges corner protectors. Machinary, chains to secure. Common sense and time you can tell. No chains for say lumber straps. Nelson straps a good for 25k breaking strength.

I recently hauled a load of steel rings that where nearly 15 feet wide. They where going in wind towers. Couldnt use chain as any scuffs or gouges would have resulted in a damage claim. And on them, being round, chains could slip. Straps had to be well padded for sharp edges but worked well otherwise.

As far as the law is concerned the use of chains vs. straps doesn't matter. They are only concerned with the working load limit.
