Just messing around. I live half way between Louisville and Evansville,In and that is pretty much what I plan on doing is Louisville or Evansville to Chicago and back. Good rates going both ways.

I tried that for awhile with a van. Did ok but a reefer could do much better.

I agree with the 'B' word, that's why I put it in quotes. I think the majority of the 'Backhaul' problem lies with the brokers. Pun intended! In all seriousness, most brokers need a serious education about rates & trucking in general. It's a fact that all brokers look for the 'Backhaul' guy first, then resort to reality at the last minute to cover a load. That is how most brokers get freight in the first place. Quoting a much lower than normal rate. Or quoting a rate just below the norm. I should add that I'm using a dry van trailer. Generally, I see $1.35-$1.45 per mile spot freight from PA to the Midwest. It would be nice to find it closer to $2.00.

Exactly! It is what gives brokers the balls to offer cheap rates going back to certain areas during certain times of the year because they know drivers need loads to those areas.

The term "backhaul" should be banned!

I wonder if anyone gets "BACKHAUL" prices for fuel, insurance, wages, taxes, all that stuff...

If it costs 1.21 cents a mile to run "REGULAR FREIGHT" why should other freight be cheaper since its a "BACKHAUL"

Its still getting hauled just like regular freight, and we face the same problems with shippers and receivers

YEP! "Backhaul" is broker speak for cheap as S#!T freight... pure and simple... it's a blatant declaration that they intend to rip off the OP/Motor Carrier..

as for the ugly backhaul word, if that term bothers you, you need to take an economics class. every industry has similar terms, over stock being one. sale being another. it's nothing but a word that means" this is all the market will bear". brokers, and carriers are never going to stop using the word. it doesn't mean the evil broker is trying to screw you over. market dynamics people. plain and simple.

Well said, Broker apologist! As anyone who's actually PAID the expenses of ANY business knows, it doesn't matter WHAT direction you're facing: the COB is the same... that goes for a Baker as well as an O/O... if you told the local grocery that, since you're willing to go through checkout number 6, as opposed to checkout number 4, you should only pay 1/2 price for your groceries... GOFER it!
