Southbound Interstate 55 was closed for several hours after two tractor-trailers crashed in Livington before 10 a.m.
Traffic was stopped at the Livingston exit for road work when the driver of a tractor-trailer rammed into the back of a stopped tractor-trailer, according to the Illinois State Police.
The driver of the stopped truck had minor injuries. The driver of the other truck was trapped in his rig for a time and had to be freed by rescuers, authorities said.
He was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Springfield, Ill., with serious injuries, according to the Illinois State Police.

Wonder seeing how it was Celadon truck if the driver had his cruise on?
-
they did a good job cleaning it up, just came through there and no sign of an accident. Traffic was backed up a few miles for road construction right after that spot though, guessing that might have been part of the cause. Still, plenty of signs saying stopped traffic ahead.

Celedon is just the kind of company to screw a driver over from injuries on the job. That driver may be on TTR in a few months with his tail of woe, should the insurance be enough to save his life...

Is it just my perception or is the number of accidents on US highways, per month, involving at least one class 8 truck, increasing substantially? I wish there was a place you could go to get US crash stats that are updated often and at least somewhat current.
No doubt only a handful of US truck crashes get reported on here but so many of these truck crashes just seem completely unnecessary.. Oh sure, you've got the drivers out there who want to claim 4-wheelers are the cause for most but I'm not buying into that notion completely. Defensive driving should eliminate many, if not most of those if it's being done. I contend we just have too many [truckers] out here with not enough experience, and when you put 2 of them in the same space then the problem becomes more acute.
If the numbers are increasing drastically as I suspect they are, somebody is going to notice and that somebody is going to use that to impose more restrictions, but no doubt they will be misguided and mis-applied and in no way go to the heart of the issue because of lobbying efforts to keep low-cost drivers in many seats.
What else can it be? They keep changing the logging rules, assuring us, these are ideal and will keep driver fatigue a non-factor anymore, trucks are much safer today then they were 10-20 years ago. Highways design is much safer, (although with denser traffic). So I'm at a loss to identify the problem other than poor driving skills as a whole becoming more common-place today.AZS Thanks this. -
