Actually, you have to show at least 15min for your pre-trip. This is because a DOT based pre trip takes a minimum of 11 min according to most officers. I have been cited in TX, OH and IL for not logging my pre trip and logging my post trip. All 3 times they told me that a pre trip is to be very particular and to catch problems before going on the road and causing safety issues. The post trip can just be done as a quick walk around since you will do another thurough pre trip before you leave again. Ever since then I have shown 30min for my pre trip and not a single DOT officer had said a word and I've passed several level 3 inspections.

 

Not doubting you, I just wanna know if it's code to log pre trip. I've been told by numerous dot that either was acceptable, as long as one is done each 24 hour period.

 

I tend to do the same thing. Especially with some loads that like to move around on me. I usually drive 2-3 hours then stop and stretch out for a few.

§ 396.13Driver inspection.
Before driving a motor vehicle, the driver shall:
(a) Be satisfied that the motor vehicle is in safe operating condition;
(b) Review the last driver vehicle inspection report; and
(c) Sign the report, only if defects or deficiencies were noted by the driver who prepared the report, to acknowledge that the driver has reviewed it and that there is a certification that the required repairs have been performed. The signature requirement does not apply to listed defects on a towed unit which is no longer part of the vehicle combination.

 

A pretrip is a must. DOT. Want to see it. As stated they want you to catch any issues before you drive an 80k lbs truck on their highway.

(a) Equipment provided by motor carrier. (1) Report required.Every motor carrier shall require its drivers to report, and every driver shall prepare a report in writing at the completion of each day's work on each vehicle operated, except for intermodal equipment tendered by an intermodal equipment provider. The report shall cover at least the following parts and accessories:

 

I could be wrong, but ooad checks aren't mandatory unless hauling haz mat, so you can log them off duty. Still do them cuz loads do shift/settle, but logging isn't necessary.
