Were are so so aleast the xtra board is busy. We cant find enough line drivers though. We hired four, and two have quit already. Those otr drivers cant handle the night work and say too much for me.

I hope you can help me. I am seeing job postings for the San Fernando/Pacoima Local and Line Haul driver positions. They sate full time but from what I am reading on here is that not really the case? Also do you know how I find out what the company approved training programs are? I am planning on attending Alliance School of Trucking in Chatsworth, CA, it is a 240 hour course. Any help is appreciated.

It will be full time, but on the extra board. You would be on call 24/7 as far as the trucking school I dont know. You would have to talk to the terminal manager about that, I think you have to have at least 1 year driving experience to be hired at reddaway.

Extra board does not mean full time hours though correct? This means I could only work a few days a week? Do they have a minimum guarantee?

Yes the extra board has no guarantee, its usually feast or famine. Its rarely that bad it does slow down in the winter though. The only guarantee for hours is if you come in to work and only work three hours you are paid for eight its called a mini. I will say that the guys on the extra board make more money than the bid drivers in the busy time of the year.

If I chose that route would it be fair to say I would have no life? If they call can I request not to work? Can you make plans or would you just be working for the company so never know when you can do things?

You can tell them ahead of time if you need a day off and they will usually work with you. Other than that you will pretty much have no life except form December to March when it's slow. Still you will be a slave to the phone. Still better than being a team driver gone on the road for 3 weeks at a time. I myself have always preferred a dedicated otr route where I'm home 2 days a week. Has to be drop and hook though. Drop and hook are the 3 best words you can hear in a driving job, imo. LTL gives you the illusion of being home more than dedicated work but it is really inconsistent. All jobs have their drawbacks but ltl is really good once you get a bid run. sleeping in a paid hotel is better than a truck stop but I sure miss the open road and going to new places too.

    Gunner710 Thanks this.
