A debit card will do just fine but still carry a little cash for laundry, laundry soap, buying snacks or something to drink when getting fuel, use debit card for meals and showers, your son should be getting paid for training with a trainer, tell your son to ask about getting a cash advance on the company fuel card, most companies will do that, some will not so ask, that should help out with expenses, I also remembered that when you get at least 50 gal. of fuel a driver will get a free shower also, I do not know how that would work with being with a trainer, The truck stop could look at them as being a team operation and both could get free showers and that would help with expenses. Off topic here, when your son gets his own truck and is finally on his own he has to ask the company about if the truck as power inverters to use for microwaves and refrigerators, eating out of truck stops is really expensive and he needs to cut costs as much as possible, if on the road for a long time he will have to find a grocery store or a Wally World and stock up on groceries........

Shaggy Thanks this. -
Did I just read a mother excited about this industry? GO MOM !
I want you to adopt me! -
Note to Shaggy - We are extremely excited about this career that our son has chosen - any field that would allow him to make money, be happy, not stand still, and lets him realize that there is a whole other world out there waiting to be discovered - how could any parent not be happy for their child ! As far as the adoption is concerned ... let me get with my husband and then get back to you...lololol
Shaggy Thanks this. -
Quick Question - Why are showers so ###### expensive - sons answer was because they are...lol...Not good enough mom wants to know why - do they supply more than just water and privacy...His trainer is in the process of helping him to build up points but in the mean time he is still putting $$$$$ out...Not nagging but do want to know? zbbrown60

It's the cost of doing business, everything costs more, the employee's wages to clean the showers, his/her benefits, the cost of water, the cost of the cleaning supplies to clean the showers, they supply towels and soap, they need washing machines and dryers to wash the towels, return in investment to rebuild the showers when they are outdated. What bothers me is why is his trainer not trying to get a driving team [ 2 ] showers, unless something has changed out there, a driver could get a free shower with 50 gal. of fuel. I know that I've been off the road for a long time but still do not think that it changed that much, A team operation would always get two showers for free with fuel.......

Congratulations to your son and for backing up his choice of a career. Hard work, Dedication and a honorable company will reward himself into a comfortable retirement. Not always about money, It's the Common sense, Planning ahead, situational awareness, ETC. he will develop and tell/teach his grand kids about the "experience".
Ton of Negatives in this industry. Last thing we need is disappointed parents expecting their kid to be a Doctor. Doctors Practice medicine. We dumb truckers only practice at cdl school.

Good on you brown60Last edited: Sep 1, 2013

Note to Rocknroll - I don't know of the team driving that you speak of, but my son did say that he had gotten his own card and that he has started getting points if that makes any sense.
Note to Shaggy - Thank You, Even with all the mechanical misshaps that has plagued the truck - He is still lovin it and can't wait for his very own truck my my how he has changed in so little time - so very proud of him..zbbrown60
