When he was going through the intersection, it slide right across without any problem and started to lift the arse of his tractor in the air.

But he drove here all the way from Texas.

As I was talking to the other CRST driver (which didn't like the way it was loaded either) he mentioned he would have put another 4x4 on top of the ones running parallel to keep the steel higher in the air and then would have crossed two chains in the rear. Each hooked to the rear of the steel, then crossed to opposite sides of the rail. When tension was applied, that would have raised the panels.

I think it would have helped, but probably not good enough for me.

but it may have dropped down like that part way thru the trip, and you are correct it could have been supported and chained to stop that from collasping so far

This picture should explain it all. You must not have caught it when Blind Driver posted it earlier

You would have used straps instead then? Just like on those tractors?

i didn't see the pic earlier. wouln't pull up with the lousy area i was in.

i'd have to agree that he should have had one of them light bars that them tow trucks use when towing other trucks.

    brakes, turns, and lights.

OR, do like the above mentioned. more wood in the back. and probably chains.

when i haul oversize. i've got lights for both long and wide. so i can drive at night if the state allows. but i won't drive some of the wide loads i've been seeing. at night. and no lights.

I have been having an internal struggle about this situation. My non-trucker reaction is that if he is doing something illegal/unsafe it is between him/law enforcement/shipper/receiver. The rest of you should bud the hell out. On the other side, I am concerned about Trucking's image with the rest of the public. That being said, I am not sure we will ever be able to overcome "public's" stupidity. They will always see truckers as big, slow, unsafe, roadblocks.

In my defense, 4 other Mercer drivers were at the Washington Agents place when I pulled in. The agent and one of the drivers check out my load and said "That's how we always hauled them".

    Chains from now on :biggrin_25514:

I would feel horrible if the CRST driver got rear ended. That would be a internal struggle of great proportions.
