I amended my post before seeing you post this. We'll settle out of court on a technicality, while I fine tune my reading comprehension.![]()

I think there's a lot of misinterpretation here. As for the slamming its a term he uses when he feels the trans might be crying out in pain. So when I take it out of gear and press the selector down he equates it to slamming down on the tranny. I'm not slamming and grinding gears I'm not that helplessly ignorant to ask why he is telling me not to rip her into gears and grind em up

ethan,
As stated earlier, press (or lift) the selector BEFORE you ever take it out of any gear. Doing it while in neutral is bad for the trans.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Not sure about Rockwell, specifically (although I expect them to be the same), but Eaton says don't do it.

This right here! Finally thankyoublairandgretchen Thanks this.

Ok so to clear this up. I dont care what a manual says. The reason for them stating not to change ranges when in neutral is so that some dummy does not change at too high of speed. It makes no difference to the synchro when it is shifted, just the rpms. Not rpms of the engine, speed of the drive shaft. The best way to destroy the range synchro is to down range too early before you are slow enough. An example is monkey in truck is lazy and finds it easier to pop it into neutral let out on the clutch and burn brakes till the stop. This only becomes a transmission problem when he flips to the low side doing 40MPH. The range synchro is only made to mesh at 20 or less. Thats it, thats all, I have rebuilt them, not that much else going on.blairandgretchen, Rawze, davetiow and 1 other person Thank this.

correct,...flipping the range switch while moving fast can spin the synchro up 20,000+RPM and destroy it. If you listen closely, even at 20 mph, flipping the switch in neutral, you can hear it spin up dangerously high.blairandgretchen, KW Cajun and cetanediesel Thank this. -
And this is why Super 10's got a bad rap. Guys would kick 'em to neutral at too high of speed, and as soon as the gear shift left the far right gate, it would range shift down. The synchro pack would spit the pins and you'd be stuck in high range. OOPS!cetanediesel Thanks this.

But......... say I was coming up to a stop light going 100 miles an hour, can I slam it into low gear to stop in time ?............. just curious.
luvtotruck Thanks this.
