I have to give you credit Blind Driver. You're not afraid to hang it out there and get it spanked. You never get your underpants in a bunch and get all defensive.

That is the thing...I am tired of everyone feeling like they need to be their brother's keeper. Everyone thinks everyone else needs to be babysat. Only a moron would be anywhere near the rear of that rolling death trap. And even at said moron's greatly reduced mental capacity their Prius will stop in about half the time as the CRST Columbia.

The bottom line is this load should have been on a 53' trailer, the driver is ultimately responsible (I have a friend who works in the septic business, he assures me it still flows downhill). But the shipper should have some kind of standards for this type of load as well, and the dispatchers should also know to send a 53' flat without headboard. So, I think you did the right thing to contact their safety department. It's their job.

When I was new at open deck I would often take pictures of loads and send them to the safety department just to cover my rear before I rolled. Sometimes dispatchers get lazy and encourage drivers to haul loads such as this, but the safety department should always trump them in any reputable company. Too many drivers wind up getting coerced into this type of thing, they need to know how to cover their tail.

you guys are all shook up about nothing the load is in a truck stop not out on the road. As far as it being rear ended what happened to "keeping YOUR Vehicle under control at all times"?Give the driver a little time and he will most likely straighten it out .How do you know that he did not go looking for help like a forklift or some more lumber or a couple pallets to put under it to raise it up some.

what would be the take if the steel was fine when he loaded and the 3/4 way into the trip , the steel buckled and dropped down like that. therein lies the problem, sometimes things happen to a load in transit that changes things thru no fault of the driver. a brace on fabricated steel breaks, dunnage under some pipe breaks, etc. or perhaps you hit a huge pothole , etc.

sometimes in open deck, crap happens and you just have to deal with it. its somewhat the nature of the beast. if you do it long enough you are going to hit a snag now and again. its how ya deal with the unforeseen circumstances that count.

it seems no one on this has even given thought this guy may had something unforeseen happen and he dealt with it best he could and made it 2 miles from delivery without incident.

just remember that when you have your unforeseen circumstance, when you are dealing with something and all someone wants to do is sic the dogs on ya.

and if ya say it wont ever happen to you, you simply aint been doing this long enough.

cpape, ya hit the nail on the head.

if the trailer didn't have that rack. a 48 could have hauled it just fine. he could have put it 2 feet front over hang. or whatever is allowed on the east side of the country. AND whatever he could get away with without interfering with his turning radius.

or is front overhang not allowed on the east side of the country?????

Because I talked to him and he didn't seem to care. Did you read this entire thread or only look at the pretty pictures?

I was on the West side of the country.
