I will have to remember to ask my trainer about any tips or tricks for this. I can think up some of my own but it would be nice not to have to waste time experimenting. After all, I am sure I am going to get enough time wasted on that. So another question, I know with experience you get more knowledgeable but just for kicks and laughs, do you ever get to the point that you can look at a load and see how it needs to be secured. I mean with flat loads like lumber and steel sure, but I am talking oddball things.

Yes after doing the ODDBALL stuff you get to the point that your ENGINEERING the securement in your mind as your looking at the load as it is still sitting on the ground , at times you ask to have it loaded in a certain way ecte based on your experience

    skellr Thanks this.

i would agree with FLATBED after a while that does begin to happen....another good thing that comes with time is load placement it helps to know where you want the load placed/positioned on the trailer especially with fuel mileage Ive been asked a few times why do you want this placed that far up on the trailer? more weight on the drives and the truck usually rides better and you basically aren't dragging the trailer vs having the majority on the spread which is what most shippers love to do

FLATBED, skellr and perufb Thank this.

Hi, I'm going to Springfield next week to start a new career. I've done some class B stuff, but now am moving up to the big time. I discussed going flatbed out of the gate with my recruiter, and have a question or two I probably should have asked first. I'll stay as a company driver, so I'm wondering if the miles and the pay compare to reefer. There are a lot of local flatbed jobs in this area so I don't mind getting the experience, but also need to be able to keep paying the bills. I also just noticed that home time may be a little more difficult in the NW, where I'm from. That isn't as big a deal, but I still need to think about it. I'm wondering if maybe I should consider reefer instead. What say you out there?

I would go with flatbed, generally more money and less waiting to load and unload.

    skellr and YYZ Thank this.

With the extra cpm from a lightweight truck and the better fuel bonus, you would make more going reefer. I would plan a step ahead and look at some of the companies you want to go to and see what kind of experience they want. If they don't require flatbed experience then I think reefer would be a good way to go.

    YYZ Thanks this.

Yeah it's usually a quick turn around unloading and picking up another load.
