    Hello all,

My husband and I have been talking about becoming a husband/wife team and trying some OTR. I found a list of companies that are pet friendly, however, through a little more searching, discovered that many companies require that cats be declawed. Our cat is not declawed, nor are we interested in doing so. A couple in another forum said that USexpress allowed their clawed kitty, but they covered his nails with soft paws (a glued on vinyl cover that goes over the nail) and the company permitted this as an alternative.

So our question is whether anyone has been in this situation and came up with an alternative or compromise with the company? Will the soft paws be sufficient? Can an extra deposit be made? Or is the rule not that strictly enforced? I'm not comfortable with the "what they don't know can't hurt them" policy.

If you have a list of companies that you know allow pets, your best option is to contact them directly. A recruiter should be able to answer your questions relatively easily. I did hear the US Xpress recruiter mention something about nail coverings on cats or something. It's not something I'm familiar with. Do you just cover the cat's claws with plastic and make them dull?

Anywho, the other thing to think about is how important your pet is to you, and can you imagine sharing a truck not only with your husband, but a cat, and of course, his litterbox. I don't hear about many cats that like moving vehicles. I have a cat I love too, but I'm sure as hell not bringing a pet with me on the road, especially as a soon to be new driver with too much to worry about already. From the research I've done on the USX forums and the rest of this site, I haven't seen much or any complaints about their Teams program (solo is kinda low rates), so I think they'd be a good fit for you if that nail covering option can work for you. If you don't like USX and are going to keep shopping, I just think it would be a shame to not look into better starting companies just because they won't let you take a cat with you. Career decisions and a lifestyle change shouldn't hinge on a cat, in my opinion.

Just get mr. kitty one of them scratching pads with cat nip, unless it is like my cat who hates cat nip.

    Declawing is cruel.

late last year I encountered the crazy cat ladies of CR England, two women and at least 3 cats in a semi........it took a half can of Lysol to rid the hallway in front of the drivers window of her odor, and that was after WalMart told her to take a shower and change clothes before she darkened their window again.

    FLATBED Thanks this.

Doubting any company will accept that unfortunately, lol. For the record, I think declawing is cruel too, but the nail covering thing might not be so bad.

I have read that diesel engines idle at about the same frequency a cat purrs at and it puts them at ease. Did that seem to be the case with your cat in the truck?

Thanks for the quick responses. My husband and I drove cross country with our cat and he loved it. This breed is known for being good travellers and he fits the bill. He loves going on trips. Pete which company did you work for with your cat?

My apologies, didn't realize you were used to travelling with the cat, lol. Plenty of breeds would find living in a truck nightmarish. I only mentioned that because there are many new drivers that can't even fathom that. A handful of people actually just walked out of the USX presentation at my CDL school after the recruiter said they didn't allow 5 certain agressive breeds of dogs (btw, seems like USX has the best pet policy of places I've looked into). New students getting pissy because they couldn't bring their pitbulls... How many pitbulls wanna live in a truck..?
