Currently under a load that the broker specified if I unload the trailer myself he will pay me the lumper fee. This is the first time I had the opportunity to do so( aside from pulling out a few pallets or tailgating). Its a floor loaded boxes, what will be required from me at the receiver? Will I have to palletize and shrink wrap them? Will I have to tag them and take the pallets to wherever they want them? Or do I only take out the boxes out of the trailer and stack them at the dock?

There's a first time for everything right..

depends on the customer. most will usually have a set way they want them palletized, and with some customers you're lucky if they will even let you use a regular pallet jack.

300? ughh I got half that, I based that on the fact that I never had to pay a lumper more than $150. I'll see how it goes tomorrow, it is 250 cases but its those big boxes of styrofoam cups they are light. If nothing else its a learning experience.

My first home's down payment was with the MAD MONEY i made from breaking the loads down.I did every single load in my reefer back years ago.I remember when i would get the Whino's off the streets in NYC and toss them some booze money and they would help me..It was a wonderful thing for us hard working truckers..

Big Greedy Business came in and started to destroy the ''game''.They would use every excuse under the sun to keep the drivers off the docks to make the MAD MONEY themselves. Then it got worse and worse and then they would use the ''Insurance'' excuse and workers comp excuse..Year after year it was almost impossible to get on a dock to make some extra under the table cash. The big business greedy scum bag worked out a plan to make the BIG MONEY without ever lifting a finger...He brought the ''lumper services'' in and gave them a cut of the action..The lumper service gets the 200.00 bucks and gives a 40% kickback to the greedy millionaire...CEO'S at there finest...This cut many jobs for the little guys...

Knowadays it is very tough to get on the dock to make the money yourself.80% of the docks do not want you on the dock. They want that money. You will have to get through the greedy ''lumpers'' and all the red tape BS to get at that 200.00 unload fee. They make it impossible to do in many places..

I remember last year i delivered to C@S Warehouse in Mass..I only had 1/2 a trailer and i told him i was going to do it myself..Here was the ''requirements''...He asked if i had long pants, work boots, work gloves, safety glasses..I said yes.He was pissed.Once in the door i came to start unloading my trailer. The big boss came to me and said,do you have a workers comp card.Much to his surprise i said yes and went to get it..Then he asked if i had a forklift Operators Certificate,i said yes sir.He got even more pissed off...

To make a long story short i lost the battle. He realized i was on top of my game.He said, well sir,you have 1 hour to unload or we will pull you from the door and you may have to wait till we have an opening.I new it would be about 2 hours and so did he.I finally caved and said #### it..He got his 200.00 bucks and i went back to my truck..

Here is the real kick in da balls..I was there 5 hours waiting for them to unload me..Do any of you know what i am talking about.?..Can you read between the lines..?...

It is so sad that the new and upcoming drivers can't make the extra money like we did on a day to day basis...

Landstar what are you talking about? I unload my trailer at 95% of my stops and make plenty of "mad money". There are some stops that try to deny you like one I was at last week. I am right now in the process if filing a complaint with FMCSA about this. When you run into these situations it's up to us to file complaints. There are laws against this. Just like we have to abide by laws so should shippers and receivers.

Great story landstar. I used to unload every chance I got back in the 90's when I worked for Swift. Not so much for the extra money but to get out of the truck and get exercise. Then on one particular load I learned my lesson big time. It had a very complicated breakdown for every product. I also had to wait each time and have a 'checker' ok each pallet. The pigs seemed to get a sick satisfaction out of making it as painful as possible. I am not kidding, but I was there for 2 1/2 days!! I would leave at night and bobtail to a nearby truckstop.
