The side mic vs. front mic argument does have merit. Most of the newer front-mic Cobras are made in China (isn't everything now?) and are largely surface-mount components. In a truck environment these don't hold up well to vibration and heat. In addition to the model 29, the newer 148s are also front-mic mounts and share a similar construct. Put simply, they are built as cheaply as possible and WILL fail in short order.

I like the new Uniden 880s. Although they seem to be mod-proof ( so far anyway) they do sound good and are reasonably well built. For the money they get my vote as the best 'new' radio on the market.

Me? I run a 35 year old 29 XLR. Built like a tank, easily modifiable for extra frequencies since it has the 858 chip in it, reliable as a sunrise and if it does require service, it's easy to fix.

Once again: Don't overlook the antenna and coax system. You will get your biggest gains there.

I've a friend who has a 980. They are rock steady on sideband and do not drift at all. They do benefit from a good mic though. Consider either an RK-56 or a 636L.

So far it seems impossible to modify them but they do work better with a good tuning.

    Great price on it!

You guys who have the Uniden 880's and 980's be careful of wiping the screen off if it gets something on it...I have been seeing allot of post from guys who have used cloths to wipe off the screen, only to scratch it up...You can get little mico-scratch's on the screen trying to clean them...Once it's scratched, the scratch's wont come off.
