I drove for McKenzie Tank Lines for 21 years, with no accidents, tickets, or chemical spills. Last year I was diagnosed with a rare throat cancer. I had 3 separate surgeries, followed by 33 radiation treatments. While attending a fellow driver's 73rd birthday party, our terminal manager stopped at our table to say hello to me, and then added "oh, by the way, you were terminated last week for missing too much time". He told me he had me on medical leave, but company headquarters called him and told him to fire me. I know of several drivers that were terminated for getting injured on the job. I've always heard "if you're not right there making them money, they'll fire you", I am now a firm believer of that.

    Sorry dang people.

If you had company insurance...you was costing them too much money.

Contact the FL dol and talk to them about the issue.

Did you use all your leave under FLMA? There's very strict guidelines as far as notification goes. I would definitely follow up with DOL. People on this forum whine and moan about unions, but this is the kind of thing they protect their members from.

This type of termination, unfortunately, is not uncommon inside and outside the trucking industry.

There needs to be a website specifically to publicly shame companies for this kind of practice.

The Internet, my friends, can be a beautiful thing.

My company will carry someone for up to 5 months with short/long term disability.

Basically if you can't come back off an injury or illness within 5 months, they will terminate the employee.

They will consider rehiring a medical termination.

So how you doing now?Is the cancer gone?As you know companies do not care how sick a person is,as long as you're not in the driver seat making them money you are nothing but a speck of dirt on their windshield.I do not do extra favors for dispatchers because most of us know they don't appreciate it anyway.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you,and hope that your health is better, but you know the old saying"what have you done for me lately" unfortunately that's the way most of these companies think ! good luck !
