Accident Prompts State Police To Conduct Truck Inspections

KITTERY (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine State Police spent Wednesday morning checking for truckers who may be driving illegally. It's in response to an accident last week in which a truck driver slammed into the back of a police cruiser.
That accident happened on the Maine Turnpike at the York toll booth. Police say the driver of the truck, 43-year-old Brian Stitham, had falsified his log book.

The cruiser he crashed into belonged to the Connecticut State Police. The troopers inside suffered only minor injuries and the prisoner they were transporting was not hurt.

Police say Stitham falsified his log book so he could stay on the road longer, and that a lack of rest combined with poor visibility likely lead to the crash. They say Stitham's truck was out of window washer fluid.

Maine State Police say it's not uncommon for truckers to drive more hours than they're legally allowed to, in order to make their deliveries on time. Troopers say that's why it's important to do these checks.

"In a large number of crashes that happened here in Maine over the past year or so, driver fatigue and their hours in service have been an issue, which is one of the reasons why we're out here doing what we do," said Trooper Robert Nichols from the Maine State Police.

State Police set up shop at the Kittery weigh station. In the first three hours of Wednesday's checks, they arrested two drivers for outstanding warrants. They also pulled another two trucks off the road.

why does it suck for the drivers??? they took a test to obtain a CDL, so they knew they were wrong... I don't want them to fall asleep and run over me!!!! If their boss told them to do wrong , they should have told the boss to haul the load themselves.....you don't have the guts to tell the boss?,that's your problem.. suffer the consequenses...drive over your hours?? kill someones child?? how big are you going to feel then????

that is why i am glad that i drive for a company that MAKES you log legal and will not let you run past your 11/14
