    I talked with one of their van drivers yesterday....

    he seemed content - but he admitted that he ran illegal as hell...

    said he deadheaded 7 hours to pick up a light crate and then drove anover 13 to get it there the next day...:biggrin_25511:

    We drove a straight truck for Panther for 8 months. For the month of Jan in 2006 these are our actual figures. My husband and I team drive so it is for 2 people.

    JAN 1ST 569.70
    JAN 8TH 2400.30
    JAN 15TH 1536.30
    JAN 22ND 3335.85
    JAN 29TH 5622.75

    Plus fuel surcharges for Jan was an additional 3312.39.

    Actual fuel usage was $2349.67

    Panther pays a straight 1.35 per mile for a typical straight truck. It goes up if the Team is Elite, the truck has a reefer, lift gate or tag axle. It can be as high as 1.65 per mile depending on the truck and team. Panther is a good company to work for but there will be times you will sit. Jan was actually a bad month.... but this gives you an idea of what you will make.

    WITH DRIVING A STRIAGHT TRUCK ARE YOU ENTITLED TO KEEP A LOG BOOK LIKE YOU WOULD WITH A TRACTOR TRAILER? LOOKING TO GET INTO DRIVING WITH MY BROTHER AND WE ARE TRYING TO FIND OUT AS MUCH INFO AS WE CAN. EVENTUALLY WE WANT TO BUY OUR OWN TRUCK AND START A COMPANY AS WELL. ANY INFO ON THIS WOULD BE HELPFULL. JUST LOOKING TO SEE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DRIVING STRAIGHT AND TRACTOR TRAILER.:biggrin_25519:

    As for DOT regs and logs, everything is exactly the same for the straight truck as for the 18 wheeler. You are required to log, weight scales, ect.
    Our truck is a 2008, T660 Kenworth, stretched out with a 24 ft box. Out requirments are the same as if we had a 53 ft box.
    If you don't want to do logs and weigh scales then you can go with the vans. The cargo vans and sprinter vans are not required to do logs or weight scales. Much more freedom with them.

    Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but if you drive commercially outside of the 100 mile zone you're required to log no mater what you drive.

    I could be in a semi one day and a pickup the next. I gotta log it.

    I tried them for a while. I don't own a rig anymore. How things went with them was not good. They billed my account almost $1500 after I had to have one of there trailers fixed and it took 6 weeks to get them to correct the error. Also it took three weeks to get paid at first then after that it was ok. But they also refused to allow me to have there quallcomm unit fixed (globe broke) when I was actually sitting outside of the main Philly Quallcomm repair shop. They made me deadhead 500 miles or close to it back to the seville repair shop and then wait for the reapir which took a couple days. Lost 5 days of run time when I was ready and able to have it fixed right there in philly. they also sent me over a 100 miles to pick up a load and when I got close to it they said someone else got it first and then they repositioned back where I was in the first place. Some of the loads paid well but some didn't. Compared to being a company driver they loose. The miles were not consistent. I guess if you have deep pockets and weeks to spare while your trying to remedy some problem with the main office then go there. They got me to the point I was scrounging for money at the pump waiting until a load check came in, expecting me to finance the float in between times, and then everyone I needed to speak with disappeared in the phone menu system during the day. Its a small garage on 2 acres with a too ritzy glitzy office building and a parking lot full of expensive daytime employee owned cars. They plugged there computers into the internet and came up with very biased contactual papers. I would never go there again. they were not helpful. They seem to be waiting for some big fleet owner with property elsewhere to appear who will carry the fuel bill for them while they try to administrate payment. If an owner op uses them and they are a big fleet owner with deep pockets it might be more appropriate. But if an owner op was that big why would they need them? maybe because they offer a phone line hooked to freight and administative personnell. But why would they stay with panther when they can't even speak with someone on the phone? And they can't resolve errors very quickly. They seem like they would be appropriate for a millionaire who owns a rig and has plenty of time and money to put up with them. They probably took in a lot of big money selling stock to the public when they first started and now they think there responsability is to file papers. For as long as the company is around. which I doubt will be long with the way they treat aveage people who own big rigs. But by the time they go under maybe there homes will be paid for from the salaries they paid themselves. i went owner op with JB for a while too. JB was great in that it was consistent miles with not alot of problems. And you could take a day off if you needed to. I would rather be an owner op at JB than a company driver without a doubt. But have chosen not to pursue owning and maintaining my own truck because of the beurocratic BS requirements with DOT etc. etc., the truck depreciation issues and extra hassle that it would be for me as a Solo driver. As an O/O I would choose JB over what Panther promises any day of the week. Except maybe saturday because there isn't always someone at every JB service center on the weekend.

    When we went to orientation the van drivers were told they did not have to keep logs. I have talked to several van drivers about the way they run as I personally want to do the van (have to talk my husband into it, un-successfull so far ) They have also said they do not do logs or weigh scales. One foreign guy in the class was a van driver but was thinking of trying the straight truck. The class instructor let him try the logs part of the orientation and then told him he should stick with the van because he could not do the logs. So I am not sure but I don't think the 100 mile rule applies to vans.
