There is a need/obligation for you to learn the basic's. One of the most important is how to properly shift , that means learning how to watch your tach/listen to the engine rpm's , learn what a power curve/operating range is , learn how to double clutch....floating gears will eventually be the way you shift , but you need the skill "And knowledge" of how to operate a manual transmission. Use this as an example...you break - down and the company you work for decides to re-power "you" with another unit.....this unit has 10-SPEED...or a 13-speed , or a 15 double over..or any other transmission you care to insert here. Without the ability to operate a manual , you're more than likely gonna be in hot water with your employer.....but if he hired you knowing you couldn't shift a manual...it's really his fault. Moral to this is.............. learn the manual......

To make it easier for absolutely anybody to drive a truck.
CDL will soon have a new restriction.

To answer your question Maverick does. They are a good company. How are you going to take road test. You are expected to double clutch. Dont let it scare you. I know drove a stick and though it took a while I learned and now Im headed to orientation. Good luck.

TransAm and UsExpress both have considerable fleets with either Full Auto or auto shift. As someone who has gout, I can appreciate an Auto, since I learned in a W9000 back when it was new, I'm entitled to drive whatever the hell I want.
luvtotruck and mje Thank this. -
I always laugh at these people who say autos are for lazy people ... like it takes ssoooo much work to shift a tranny LMAO. And on top of that for OTR drivers to say anything about people being lazy is beyond me since a hair stylist probably has a more laborous job than 95% of OTR drivers.
In this day and age not learning a manual will hurt your job opportunities, no doubt about it. -
So woodys, he leaves after two years at the company he hates, he looks around and finds that one company he has wanted to drive for sjnce he started school, maybe a local job, but they have all standards, he applies for them, doesnt mention he cant drive a standard, they do a road test and he bombs, they send him home. How does that not hurt his job opprotunites?
Woodys Thanks this. -
You should probably re-read the last part of my post ...

But yes, that's a perfect example of why not learning manual will hurt you. Maybe in 30-40 years better automatic transmissions will exist and be used more by carriers. But not anytime soon. Not knowing manual takes a large amount of potential employers out of your cards.Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this. -
auto shift usa truck /us xpress/ cr england / jb hunt and swift had some

That's why I said you need to know when you start out. But my father drives them with Averitt so long as you making money. But we all know driving a standard shift is part of trucking that's why a lot can't even move a rig around a yard. An automatic is easy drive you'll only need to learn to maneuver the truck as one skill. But its 2013 things are changing
