I delivered bread locally for 16 years here in Arkansas. I changed carreers due to burn out and wanted to drive for a living. I found out pretty quick that most companies wont hire you without otr experience .I wanted to work for Miller from the start but they couldnt hire me so I went to work for Maverick in Little Rock for 6 months. After 6 months of pestering Miller I was finally hired on and I love it.
Most companies dont value your time and will make you sit without getting paid. At Miller I dont have to give away my time and run illegal just to make a living. I am sitting at home over christmas (2 days off with pay) and the feeling of paid holidays is wonderful.
    my pay:loaded miles .4125/mile
    :empty miles .2900/mile
    :load/unloadpay/13.70/hour
    :unproductive pay/12.15/hour
Miller pays for layover, waiting on dispatch, waiting to uload/load/motels on layover/15 per nite sleeping in truck/15 dollars per day meals/blue cross insurance,retirement/tolls any road expence to do with the truck. I love it here and so far since May I have made 28,000 dollars with paid insurance and retirement. Miller pays perdiem in the form of a petty cash check and it comes out to around 150 per week cash money. I use this for travel money and meals on the road.
Generally you will be away from home for 8-9 days at a time but layovers are in motels and when you get home you can take several days off 3-4...When I worked for Maverick they got me home most weekends but only for 34 hours I like being home for 3 -4 days.
Most drivers will make around a 1000 per week with paid for insurance and retirement....any questions.....wonderman

    wonderman,

It looks like a good company. I work for a local company that pays hourly for all of my time but I do have a question for you. Why is there a difference in your pay if you are loaded or empty? I don't get it, sorry. Why are you punished (for lack of a better word) having to be paid less money while driving to pick up your next load? I don't and never will understand this. You are in the service of your company. It is still just as dangerous and time consuming to drive empty. Hopefully, you can help me out. Happy holidays.

    Drive safe

In the tanker industry we do a lot of back hauls in order to top load the tank. I dont like getting paid less but the real truth of the matter is,it is less dangerous than pulling a half full smooth bore tank. The customers pay to clean our equipment after we unload so generally we run a lot of out and back loads to top load as much as allowed...I like this way of running personally because you can run with a little more prdictability and guess where you are going. Miller has senior company drivers who run out and back two times per week and make over 1000 per week delivering 2 loads per week.wonderman

Is the 6months OTR your only ClassA experience? I seen your bread experience, but wouldnt that be in the lil box truck? What other hiring requirements do they have? I live in Huntsville, Al, not close to any teminals, but possibly close to a customer. Are the trucks take home?

So you are running out loaded and back empty? so really you have to split the pay rate between loaded and empty

Sounds interesting. I just have a couple of questions. Do they require experience, or will they hire new drivers? Also, what areas of the country do you drive in? I'm based out of Minnesota.

Miller is requiring 6 monthsOTR and you have to be 23 years or older. They will take you younger if you are married. Now the bad news I think you live out of area of a terminal. the terminals are;mobile,el dorado ar.,n little rock, plant city fl,bartow,fl,atlanta ga,lansing il,e st louis il,hattiesburg ms,jackson ms, greensboro ns,orangeburg sc,memphis tn,beaumont tx, houston tx,charleston wv,....the company wants you to live within 200 miles of a terminal.....I work out of little rock and drive 71 miles to work but its only one trip per week so i spend less on gas than my wife who works down the street....
