Well I just graduated truck driving school and i'm finding myself in a pickle, I applied to several companies but two of the companies that I believe I have the job are with Schneider and FedEx Ground (team) working for a contractor. Schneider (regional) doesn't pay the best wages starting out but looks to be a secure job with plenty of growth potential, I already did my drug test and physical and just have to decide on a orientation date. Today I just got back home from a FedEx Ground hub in Dallas, went and completed my application there, the FedEx contractor said I would be working as a team and I would be making around 1K per week but i'm not sure if this is legit. I am not to worried about Schneider as one of my instructors said it was a good company. I just don't know about FedEx Ground working for a contractor. Both say I would be home on the weekends.
Schneider or FedEx Ground ?

If your not in desperation mode keep looking, there's more companies that offer weekend hometime!

Well most of the companies that I spoken too are OTR and would be gone for 2-4 weeks, most of the local gigs here in the Fort Worth area require 1-2 years of experience. I don't have a problem going OTR, but I don't like the idea I would be leaving my wife behind for that long, we don't have any family here and have no kids.

At FedEx Ground it's very possible you will be given a 1099 instead of a W-2; thus being considered self-employed. I'm surprised they allow contractors to hire students because they didn't used to. Don't know about Schneider but depending on the set-up, FedEx Ground used to be a pretty good gig. Notice I said "used to be," not sure how it is now but there's a reason I left in 2006.

Yeah when I spoke to an actual FedEx Ground HR rep, she seemed surprised when I said I just graduated trucking school. I heard the 1099 is technically illegal, the contractor said he would be sending my shirt and tax forms to me in the mail.

1099 illegal? It may be; in fact, many say that it is illegal yet the great majority of FedEx Ground contractors pay their "employees" this way. Over the 4.5 years I was there I worked for two contractors. One paid me with a 1099 and the other with a W-2. Both were good jobs. Make sure that if you are paid with a 1099 that you are putting money away to file your quarterly taxes or..........you will have a lot to come up with on April 15th.Big Duker Thanks this.

Go with Schneider. Start out your career with a real trucking company instead of a contractor. A lot of things can go wrong on the road. You want the support infrastructure that a mega offers a rookie.
Plus, Schneider has tanker. You can do it after six months then that experience will easily lead to a local job.Grimacus and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
I work for Fedex freight, I know alot about Fedex ground, don't go with them you want be happy there and they don't pay well at all. Go with Schnider you will have a great job and you will be able to grow there. Hope that helps
Grimacus Thanks this. -
Well the document I have states the pay is $1000 a week, which i'm thinking is a salary. What I like about Fedex Ground is it would only be drop and hook and would be driving hub to hub, my concern though is working for a contractor, what is the job security long-term.

Are you looking for advice, or are you looking for someone to lean the way you are leaning?
If I had to choose between the two: I'd choose Schneider without any hesitation, learn what I can in 6 months, then switch to tankers....... If we weren't talking about "ground", AND working for a contractor: there's a real good chance I'd have a different answer. (But were not)fr8te_sh8ker and Grimacus Thank this.
