    Red:

I am not getting in to it for the money. There are a thousand jobs out there which will provide more income than trucking, but I have some emotional issues--I LOVE driving!:biggrin_25519:

Since I do not currently own a home, and I love driving, I want someone to pay me for it.

My expectation is that the first year will bring $40-$45K driving for one of the big trucking companies. I don't think I have too many illusions, do I?

Asheville, DO NOT pay $5,000 (or borrow it) to go to school. there is money available from the government (job retraining money) to pay for this. I wish I had known about that before I forked out $3,000. ask the school about these programs, or ask the unemployment security commision near you.

Could you tell me a bit more about this/these programs? I want to get my CDL for as little out of pocket/personal debt as possible, and I do not know what avenue you are referring to above for govt money for job retraining. Is this grant money through a community college which teaches CDL? I stopped at my local C.C. today to check, a rather large C.C., and they offer no classes. Instead, they told me about the local Roadmaster Program:biggrin_25521:

Is the job retraining program most likely to pay for a CDL school a Federal Program, or State funded?

I couldn't really tell you any more. like I said, find a prospective school and ask them about grant programs, or contact the ESC in your area. a friend of mine got this grant money to go to trucking school. he finished school but decided to quit driving after 3 weeks of training. I think it's up to the folks who do the grants to decide which school you'll attend. but laying out $5G to drive a truck??? NO sir!

I agree with you, it makes no sense to me to pay $5,000 to drive a truck, especially when the first year pay is only $35K to $45K.

I did find a local Roadmaster, and spoke with the recruiter. He said absolutely nothing about any grant programs. I tried the local C.C., the main one in this area, and they do not offer any form of CDL training.

    What is ESC?
