Local dude had a farm sale some other dude from bout 250 miles away purchased two pieces of john deere tillage equipment. Dudes some how got my number and asked if I could get it moved by friday. Okay let me go look at it. So I check it out this morning, alright if I turn everything sideways and dude has big loader he can set it on my trailer just take hitches of and I'd be 10.5 wide. Taking hitches of would be easy, 30 feet of deck space and maybe 15,000 lbs. No chance of me getting a load back home from destination. Called the guy told him I could do it made sure he could unload me got directions then he says what you gonna charge per mile? Well I'm over width and gonna take a little time to load and take hitches off soooo $6.50. He said thanks for wasting my time have a nice day. I tried getting it out of him what he thought it was worth but he wouldn't say. Just said he'd drive a tractor 250 miles before he paid me that much.
So maybe 6.50 $ was a little high but I was gonna have a full day into it. I'd have done it for less but not a lot less. And like I said no load to be had going back home.
What would you move it for?
another what would you bid?

If you have $1000 deductible or more on your insurance He could easily come back & get you for a scratch or a dent. So $1600 is not too much for a short run and weather the load takes you home or not has nothing to do with the price of the service you provide.Ask farmer john if he will take less for his crop because he likes to stay home doing his job.or ask him how much he could haul it for and if he is willing to buy a truck and trailer to haul cheap freight and then give him CH Robinhood phone Number. You Never know they might give you a bonus for referring boy genus to them.

id also drive a tractor 250 miles before paying someone 1600 bucks to haul it. he will get it moved for under 800 easy. less if he isn't in a big hurry. not saying it's only worth 800 or that I'd haul it for that. But someone will.

Welcome to the world of dealing with farmers! Most frugal people I know of to put it nicely. I used to work at a place years ago that sold older trucks you know old but in good shape like a farmer would need. These people would have a cardiac arrest if you tried to sell them an old grain truck for 5K that you had 4.5K in. These are the same people who would go to a JD dealer and WRITE A CHECK for a combine, or a tractor, 55K dually, whatever. I don't see anything wrong with that rate. Tell him to come on and get it himself. Or better yet offer to drive it over there for him for $700 to "help him out".
dannythetrucker Thanks this. -
That would be 1000 miles in a tractor. Two trips.
Tire wear alone would cover a good chunk of what the ops asking for a rate. Fuel would cover another hefty chunk of it.
Factor in a tractor that goes 20 mph(I know some are faster and some are slower) and you have 50 hours of labor just driving. -
you're right, I wouldn't actually do it, but I'd never pay that rate because I know some hungry driver would run it for 500 bucks.cetanediesel and MJ1657 Thank this.

I think I would of made him throw out a number first in the negotiation. That way you know how far apart you are, before you have to say anything.

There are always these same discussions on the farm boards. Farmers realize it cost money to operate a truck, but they are always looking to save a buck. That rate would not work around the farmers I work with, 1200 dollars would get the job done. Many just decide to take a tractor and go get the equipment. They enjoy the ride, as most do not get much time off.

I've spent alot of my life on a tractor or combine. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything but..... 1000 miles going down the road would feel like about five lifetimes.
-
Completely agree! Farthest I've ever gone in a tractor one way was 85 miles. At least the tractor did 28 mph!
