I've always been told that you can work in any state no matter what your cdl is issued in but when looking at jobs in Illinois almost very single one says must have valid Illinois cdl. So if I live 15 minutes away in Kentucky I can't work there? These are local jobs btw, none of the otr jobs have specified a state cdl.
Working in a different state then your Cdl

Probably the result of the ad is for a person who lives in the state and works in the state.
You can call them and state that you are a Kentucky resident with a valid cdl and probably get hired. -
There is no Federal requirement, nor state requirement that you have to have a CDL from the state you are employed in. Thousands of drivers work for companies that have home offices/terminals in states other than the one they are licensed in.
Having said that, a company can on their own, decide to only hire drivers licensed in their state, maybe for tax purposes. If illinois has state income taxes, but Kentucky doesn't, they would have to pay you according to the tax structure of the state of your home of record. Some might not want the headache of the extra paperwork.
Or, the ad was developed by someone who would not be aware of the Federal implications of a CDL. They just figure only people from Illinois would apply for the job. -
Ok that's what I was kind of thinking. I also maybe thought it was part of some insurance requirement.

Yeah, call the prospective company. Sometime,. bordering states allow people to "bend the rules". I used to live in Stateline, Nv. (directly on the border with S. Lake Tahoe, Ca.) All the casinos are in Nv. and most people live in Ca. who work there. I currently live in San Diego with an Az. D/L. I worked last year for a RV dealer just driving locally here in San Diego, and they and their insurance co had no problem with me having an Az. D/L. There were several guys there with Az. D/L's. Plus, my car insurance knows I have an Az. D/L and has no problem with it. Officially, the Feds say your D/L (CDL) must be issued in the state you reside in. However, you can work for any OTR company in any state.

So how do you keep the az cdl, do you use a po box or something?
I really need to move back to illinois for family reasons but Im gonna do everything in my power not to retake everything to transfer my cdl to IL. Both ky, mo and In are really close to where I would live in Illinois so I was wondering if there was anyway I could do that with a po box or some other way... -
I have an address I use in Az. for the physical address, however, for my mailing address, I have a PO Box in Mountain Center, Ca. ! I just got notification from Az. (mailed to my Ca. address) to re-new my cdl physical, which expires 9/26.

Ohhh ok. Well I talked to two companies hiring and both said I have to have an Illinois cdl specifically. Weird, and a bummer cause im not gonna re do everything in Illinois. Hopefully ky or mo are easy cdl transfers.

Apply to others anyway because your license is supposed to be good across all states and reflect the state your residency is in. However for some reason Texas employers are making people change their addresses to a Texas residency on their license even if you just work there.
