A lot of brokers are trying to get a feeling for you, trying to see if you are someone they want to work with regularly. The more freight they can put you on, the more business they can handle and the more money you can make.
ANother reason is there may be specific requirements in the load that you may not be able to fullfill regardless of the price.
A final reason is they want to make sure you know the value of the load, the volitility or lack their of of the product. The first person to get chewed out from the customer is going to be the broker if something goes wrong. So they want to make sure you understand the situation.
If you want to be treated like a number and a drone behind a wheel, just asking for the price will work. If you want to build a relationship and make more money, it will pay dividends to shoot the breeze for 30 seconds about the finer details. -
SO how is this different then when you say a broker is looking for a cheaper truck after they booked you on it?trees Thanks this. -
you are WRONG.......wait, what was the question???
mustang970 and truckon Thank this. -
Actually, I find like-ability to be really useful during negotiations and you can be aggressive, but it's how you're aggressive, I choose to be aggressive with my pricing, not my manner. Call it the dick factor..... I don't like dicks, so I try really hard not to act like one.... You're right on Dan, it's pretty pointless to be a dick.Big Jay Thanks this.

The difference is I didn't fall off the load in favor of the better one. I looked up at the ceiling and wished I hadn't taken the load I had....
I was brushing off the second load by saying I would check to see if I had the rate con, which I already did, but didn't want to tell that to the broker with the better paying load... that I was calling on his load when I already had a rate agreement from another brokerage....You see, my curiosity caused me to call on that second load, which turned out to be a fantastic load, but my integrity kept me glued to the one I had committed to, which also was paying really well, just not quite as much as the one going to an even better area.Big Jay and BookingYou19 Thank this. -
No, actually me calling on loads after booking a load to see if I would have done better by waiting it out a little longer....
And yes, you will always do better by waiting it out longer, but at the risk of not getting anything at all.....
A kind of musical chairs, if you will.
I like to make sure that I have a chair when the music stops, and I can't help but wondering if I could have gotten a better seat..... but that's just me.Big Jay Thanks this.
