The 08 will also be phased out, your better off just getting an 2011 engine good for over the next 15 yrs.
I went into the dealership with the same concerns, high mileage. Have the 2000 detroit 60 12.7. As the service writer comes out she says, "you have excessive blowby", coming from your engine. She writes it up and waits for the mechanic to give an estimate on repairs I needed(electrical). When he arrives I ask him, what causes the excessive blowby, he said, "the rings are worn, and its an OLD old tired truck". I start sweating bullets.
So I ask for a dyno test to be performed. Two and a half weeks later, they get the dyno test results, and the I ask the service adviser what do all the numbers mean, she has no idea, and has to call the master mechanic to come and explain it.
Master mechanic shows up, and starts talking about how great this engine is and how it still has 408 HP to the wheels, being it is rated at 435 on the fly. Then he explains what everyone thinks is excessive blowby is normal for this engine when its idling. There is a ring on this engine that expands when idled, and contracts upon acceleration. Service Writer just starred into space.
No smoke and is flawless, only 300K on the engine. But everyone at the dealership kept on insisting it was an OLD truck. Make sure it can be retrofitted before you spend anymore money on it. Bunch of BS. After the master mechanic spoke, you could hear a pin drop in that office.
The next obstacle is at the retrofit department, the rep there said, it has to be a 1996 or newer truck AND!!!!! YES AND, it has to PASS a logging test, which records the heat of your exhaust, IF IT DOES NOT HEAT UP TO THEIR SPECS, IT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BE RETROFITTED..... So how much is this test, $350 out of your pocket to tell you if does or does NOT pass.
Now to find financing?? No one will let you borrow a dime unless you sign your truck over, loan rep said, their dept was mainly setup to help finance new trucks after you agree to deliver yours to a wrecking yard. We are local guys, only 30K miles per year here, so what did we qualify for a new truck, $10K for wrecking your good old 60 Series. I had one finger to show that day, and I still have a bad taste to all this....adominguez, Hardlyevr and Ranger Bob Thank this. -
Thank you for all of your replies! I greatly appreciate it!!
Do you guys know how someone would get caught if you didn't have the filter? And how much the fines are for if you get caught without a filter?Last edited: Aug 30, 2013

I have a 06 model engine year. I went to Peterbuilt to see about the voucher (aka Grant) CARB does not have grants for this truck yet. Best part, Peterbuilt has the list of years and what engine years are good from CARB. I seen the list, 04-06 is good until Jan 2015 won't find this list on the CARB website, but dealerships in the voucher programs have it. So screw them! I'am running mine until they kick 95 and olders off the road in 2016.
its all scare tactics! The might have the deadline by the end of the year, but won't enforce for 2 more years, as long as your registered at CARB website.adominguez and Ranger Bob Thank this. -
I'm gonna put in for the low mileage exemption and just come home. How are they gonna know where I ran my miles except on Ifta reports. and if you only show 950 miles a year due CA on your Ifta whose to say it's not true.Dewey120 Thanks this.

Q&A from the site;
Are there any other extensions or options I should learn more about?
Yes, small fleets can also take advantage of other compliance extensions or exemptions for vehicles
operated exclusively in parts of the state with less polluted air, log trucks, low-use vehicles operated less
than 1,000 miles per year in California. If you are a single trucks owner with a low-mileage construction
truck you may be able to delay compliance until January 1, 2016, but you must report by March 30, 2012,
to be eligible.
Notice the Exclusively...... No ifta options. From what I understand, if you don't have it installed you can't come into the state, just like the ports on older trucks. I'm not familiar with the ports, but how do they enforce older trucks not allowed going in?

The CARB rep mentioned that they will only be able to screen about 1% of the trucks coming into California the first year until they get their license plate scanning implemented. They will scan our plates and be able to get the info on our engine. I am just going to do the low mileage provision during the year 2014. By the end of that I will probably be ready for a newer truck anyway.
The CARB rep said when we report our truck at the beginning of the year we need to report our odometer. Then at the end of the year we give them our current odometer. I am not sure how exactly they will calculate or CA miles through that method but I am sure a lot of drivers will be fudging on the numbers.adominguez Thanks this. -
Ports are a different animal. They are owned and operated by Municipalities (Port Authorities) and therefore will comply with whatever State and Local regulations come along. If you don't have the appropriate compliance stickers on your truck you won't get in. Interstate trucking operates under the jurisdiction of the FMCSA so IMO the State does not have the right to regulate or interfere with the free flow of Interstate Commerce. I know it sounds like an old worn out arguement but it is correct. I don't care what agency or what court says differently. They are the ones acting illegally turning the average workingman into a criminal with unconstitutional legislation.

The company I had applied to for the retrofit, was from the Velocity Group(Los Angeles Freightliner), they emailed in requirements to approve the retrofit.
They said CAT engines are no good, they break down ALL THE TIME....
We ask all clients to do the data logging process first with the <-----------There Fee $350, Found another dealer, new fee $0> retrofit installer. You will need to conduct this process in order to> find out what type of DPF is needed and how much the unit will cost.> Below are what our requirements are to qualify for our retrofit financing program:> * Truck must be paid off **will consider refinancing if credit is> reasonable**> * Engine model year must be between a 2000 - 2006> * Cannot be a CAT or MaxxForce engine **will consider if credit is reasonable We have a CAT engine, why cant I retrofit my 180K mile CAT engine?
Below are our reasons:· CAT has discontinued manufacturing engines· Re-sale value is drastically reduced due to the manufacturer discontinuingproduction· More instances of breakdowns.adominguez Thanks this. -
pft.. the CAT in my truck is allowed to run all the way till 2023.. so that's 9 more years, I could run one rebuild in that period of time and at the 9th year sell it to mexico for 5 grand.. still I'll make money off of it in the long run.
