I've really enjoyed reading this thread and when I ran across this article in the Gainesville Sun, thought you folks may be interested. I'm shocked that they would sell his truck when he retires - gives a whole new meaning to "retiring your jersey"!
EXCERPTS FROM THE ARTICLE:
Walmart honors truck driver for 3 million miles of safe driving
Through every obstacle, for more than 3 million miles, Johnny "J.R." Roberts never crashed, never picked up a speeding ticket, always stayed focused.
And after 28 years as a WalMart driver, Roberts, 54, of MacClenny, was honored Wednesday morning at the company's distribution center in Alachua for safely driving the equivalent of 120 trips around the Earth without a scratch.
He pointed to a red carpet a short walk away from the tent. A royal-blue truck sat in between two bouquets of flowers. On the side, in white letters, were the words: "J.R. 3 Million Safe Miles."
WalMart honored Roberts by giving him a brand new Freightliner truck built from the ground up to his specifications that can be driven only by him until he retires. After his retirement the truck will be sold to ensure that no other WalMart driver will have ever operated it.
"From now on," Paulk said, "he's the only person who can drive that truck."

interpreter, rebelkidd, newbieatwalmart and 6 others Thank this. -
Great story! I can relate to this accomplishment and what it takes to get there. I have over 2.6 million miles safe driving prior to me coming to work for Walmart Transportation, so I will never see the day I reach 3 million miles just at Walmart Transportation only. I will see if I can add another 2 million miles to my record before retiring.

Thanks for sharing!

For me, it is about 1.7 million. I know I will never hit this milestone here, either. However, like folks have said, I am pretty happy where I am, thanks !!!
Small things to make you happy.................. having the same truck for the whole week. LOL Thus, this week is a happy week.

LeoLady, thanks for sharing! That right there is my goal! To be one of the few that can make it here and make 3 million safe miles.
Hey Tom, so was orientation everything you expected it to be? I am sure your ready to go out next week and start forming your routine. Dennis is a great guy and he can answer all your questions. You should see a good deal of stores from the GM, Groc, SAMS, and IDC sides next week. Tonight laying over in Baytown with a load bound for Sanger. Night ya'll!TomOfTx Thanks this. -
I hope you make it to 3 million Matt! I do not see myself driving when I am in my 70's, so another 3 million miles is too tall an order to fill.

Orientation went great. Had a lot of fun! I look forward to spending the week with Dennis. He and I get along very well, especially after spending a lot of time with him this week, since he was in class with us. The OBC will be a piece of cake. I just need to get accustomed to the Walmart paperwork and establish a routine. I will take it slow until I feel I have a good routine going. That could be a week or a month, but I will get there!
You probably know Debra in safety has a nickname "The Baconater". Well, I developed a nickname is class too! My classmate on Thursday began calling me "The Donut Monster"! LOL! What can I say, those donuts they were bringing to class everyday were hard to resist.....and I made sure there was no left overs!

Lol OMG! See we told you they like to feed us! I don't have a nick name but my CB handle will do when I get my own truck. "Lil Rascal". That's me!
-
I noticed. And I didn't resist the food either!

My CB handle is "Tomcat". I wanted it on my shirts, but no dice. That is what I will put on my truck when the time comes.

Sounds like you had a great orientation Tom. We got no donuts. Just free lunch. Had fun though. Only bad thing was that I didn't even have my orientation at MY DC in Tobyhanna. I went to Pottsville for mine but it wasn't a big deal. You'll enjoy the mentor week and I'm sure you'll love the job. I still can't believe that I'm here, and that there is no pressure yet LOTS of work! 14 hours every day this week so far. And not a minute of wasted time.
I have a couple friends who won't apply cuz you gotta share trucks. Their loss. It doesn't even seen out of the ordinary now that I've been doing it for a few weeks. And with this 6/3 I'll be using one of two, alternating between the two. Just seems like normal routine now. Don't mind at all. I look at it this way...if they can save money on trucks, they'll keep paying us what they are, LOL.
