Police: 7 dead in likely drag-race crash
    2/16/08

ACCOKEEK, Md. - A car plowed into a crowd that apparently gathered to watch a drag race on a suburban road early Saturday, killing seven people and injuring at least four, police said.

The car went out of control on Route 210 around 3:40 a.m. and hit people standing on the roadside, Prince George's County Police Cpl. Clinton Copeland said. A tractor-trailer that came by shortly afterward may also have struck someone on the road as it tried to avoid the crash, he said.
"It's probably one of the worst scenes I've seen," Copeland said. "This is a situation that could have been avoided, and it's a very tragic situation."
Four people were taken to hospitals, Copeland said. Their conditions weren't immediately known.

Route 210 has two lanes in each direction and traffic lights about every 150 to 200 yards in Accokeek, about 20 miles south of Washington.
Investigators were working to piece together the chain of events and had "more questions than answers," Copeland said.

I wish they would the call this what it really is..."illegal street race". Some people might group all drag racers into the same category.

You beat me too it. As a drag racing fan for 35 years, I can't stand it when the media calls it "drag racing" instead of what it really is..."illegal street racing". Drag racing is done legally on a sanctioned 1/4 mile track with rescue personel present. Don't know why they just couldn't had waited until Cecil County Dragway opened in a couple of months, and raced each other on a wednesday night, to prove who was the fastest. Sad.....

Forrest Gump's momma used to say
    "Stupid is as stupid does."
    Hmmmmmmm

Makes me wonder,............................who is/was the stupidest?
The illegal street race drivers,................or those standing directly in harm's way? Either way, what an expensive lesson and hard way to learn it.

SOMEbody is going to have their day in court. Probably followed by jail time. What a waste -- all the way around. In the end, does it really matter who had the faster car?

News reports today indicate that the vehicle was not involved in the street racing that struck the people.

Your comment is a little cold hearted to those that lost family members.

Whether they were really there watching or happened to be unlucky, the comment is still wrong.

Had they not been there watching the race, they would still be alive. Why else would they be standing on the side of road with a 55 mph speed limit?

I agree. This was at something like 3:30 in the morning in the pitch black with a bunch of these people actually out in the road. Sorry, I dont have any sympathy.
