Was hoping someone could help me out. I recently finished up CDL school and passed my test. My license just came in the mail and under restrictions it has QL/1. I know about having to wear glasses/contacts but not sure why I have the L for airbrake restriction. Is that supposed to be there or was there some mistake. I passed the permit and driving skills test for airbrakes. I'm in Pennsylvania. Any help would be great, thanks.

Yea I'm gonna have to contact my school and ask them about it. My school was 150 hours of classroom/driving and the entire time we drove tractor trailers with air brakes. They had a copy of my permit and never said anything. That's why I thought it was normal to have that "L" on it, but when I started looking into it, it didn't make sense.

All the states use the 'L' as airbrake restriction! If it was on your permit it means you failed the airbrake part of the written tests or someone made a mistake. If it is on your CDL it usually means you didn't take the road test in a truck with airbrakes.

Get out your state's CDL manual and read what it says about the 'L' designation! Someone failed to mention that you failed the airbrake section of your tests! If you passed all the other parts of the written test but failed the airbrake section the states puts an 'L' on the permit and will stay on there regardless if you pass the road test.

the L restriction was put on before I took the written test. After the written test next to air brakes it says pass and date

Then you have nothing to worry about, the OP got his CDL in the mail and it was still on there, something is incorrect.

    NJ Newbie Thanks this.
