I'm trying to get an idea of where truckers are in terms of technology, as a whole for app development consideration. Please submit your vote only once and your cooperation will be appreciated. Obviously I'm concerned with smartphone users but I also need to get a sense of how many drivers have not nor care to move to smartphone technology.

Other comments are welcome such as your future plans for cellular technology changes, gripes with current phones, etc.

    Thanks again.

Just upgraded from dumb phone, with a move from T-mobile to Verizon to get better coverage nationwide.

With Vodaphone selling Verizon back their 45% and Microsoft buying the Nokia unit and many licenses we should see exciting changes in the way we communicate shortly.

Expect kick bootie tablets from Microsoft to come out and expect Verizon to expand their service and offerings in 2014. I'm tired of AT&T and their BS and I'm looking for a new home for my cell dollars. Sprint is the cheapest...and there is a reason for that....so likely I'll try Verizon.

I recomend you don't buy any technology for the next 6 mos...to give this time to play out. You will be happy ( ier )

I have been with Verizon since 1998 I am not changing anytime soon, I like my coverage, I like the hot spot ability and I like I can upgrade my phone every so often. Thank You.

That's a shame. I put a lot of effort in to building this trucker app for IPhone and I don't have the energy to to rebuild it for Android. But I suspected truckers would be more prone to migrate to the cheaper technology but I made long-considered decision to build in IOS because it is solid and faster then android. We'll see how it goes with the Apple approval process. A monkey can get things written for Google acceptance but this thing is pretty deep and would be a huge new learning curve for me that I'm not sure I want to or have the time to undertake (not divulging any more then that)

stats have been out for 3 years now. it didn't take long for android to lead the pack.

i don't like the fact that everything i want to do with my phone. has to go through apples store and approval process.

and since my phone is rooted. there's tons of roms i can install for whatever flavor i feel like playing around with. along with tons of other possibilities.

the apple phone is too small and very limited.

STexan, bummer that you would have to go through another learning curve for your app. You might consider hiring someone to port it to Android for you, although I would encourage you to bite the bullet and do the learning curve for Android anyway. Unfortunately in today's market it might be best to be "bilingual" for a while until the market sorts itself out.... but then the sorted out period will only last for a year or two anyway... ;)

The thing is, my app is more of a true "productivity app" and does a lot of things many build spreadsheets to do, then it will do much more as well. It would never make money as a "free app" with ads. The truckload trucker market is relatively small anyway but I suspect many would want the app as it puts that truckers historical data at their finger-tips, is easy to enter and, view, and export to pdf, but would they pony up $6.99 perhaps (or more) to buy it? I would not release the app for less then that and if the trucker consumer feels everyting worthwhile should also be free, I want not part of that and refuse to play that game.

You have to push out 200,000 plus copies of a free, ad based apps, that engage the user for hours (leisure) to make any serious development time worthwhile in terms of revenue, and there just aren't that many truckload carrier drivers, and the app isn't an app you'd spend more then 2 or 3 short sessions daily in, and when you get your pay stubs in-hand. So ad supported is not an option in this case, IMO. But I intend on consulting on this matter before continuing with the IPhone release or the Android development.
