So please tell me are there any special requirements to a driver to become a trainer? When I wanted to become a trainer when I was in law enforcement it was a long process requiring classroom hours. I have been reading the horror stories ( with a grain of salt) about all the terrible trainers out there. Would appreciate any input.

Companies require 6 months otr exp which is not nearly enough. That's like the blind leading the blind.Whatever horror storie you have heard are true for some, then others have a pleasant exp with their trainers. Some don't have the patience to be a trainer. They have to go thru a trainer/trainee class which I think is 3 days. But the bottom line is with 6 months under your belt and a pulse, you're as good as in.

I think they have to breath and also know how to start the truck but that's all that I think they need to do to be a trainer.

By the way, I have met a trainer (won't mention the company) that has no driving experience but he is "book smart" so the management of the company put him in a truck to 'train' - I am not making this up.

Depends on the company, each has somewhat different guidelines. Some require six months experience (probably bad idea in most situations), some twelve and some twice that.

Really?Thats the way it should be with every company and maybe why they don't have a real bad rep from other drivers.

Why not mention the company? Folks should know this so they know who to avoid. Drac I don't think there are any specific requirements but I'm sure different companies are.......different. Probably the horror stories that you hear about are mostly from students trying to teach students and not knowing things that experience will teach you. Although I'm sure there are plenty of new drivers out there training that have common sense and are smart, I find it fairly stupid for companies to send them out with students because there are things that they just don't know or have experienced.

One of my classmates went to a local company that pulled vans. He was ordered by his trainer to pull a u-turn as they missed an exit or something like that. The new driver paused because this was breaking the law, the trainer screamed at him again and he complied. As soon as he completed his turn an OHP cruiser pulled him over and he got cited.

Thanks for all the input. I have directed people in my class and the incoming class to check this site out and ask questions. I hope they comply..
