Let's say your running out of hours to drive. You decide to pull off at a rest area or truck pulloff on the interstate. There are three other trucks parked. It looks safe. It's about 10pm when you shut down. Your asleep when at 12am someone knocks on your door. The person says your trailer door is open. Or you have a fuel leak. You might want to check it out. What would be your reaction? What would you say?

lol....I was just wondering how you handle that type of situation.
My uncle told me about the time he was walking up to a dock at 3am and a guy started to approach him from the parking lot. He knew he didn't work there. So he said he put his hand in his jacket and told the guy not to come any closer. The guy figured out real quick he had some steel in his pocket and went on his way.
You don't see many questions in here about street smarts. So I thought I would post one. Might learn something new.mje Thanks this. -
look out the mirror an see if your door is open... open the window a crack an smell for any fuel.. don't put yourself in a situation where you have to fight for your life, use your brain an analyze the situation.

That's a good question and your initial instincts are usually right. Use your judgement. Someone knocking on your door at that time would be suspicious to me unless I can clearly see 'the problem' in my mirrors or without getting out of the truck. But if there are other people around within clear sight of my truck I might be more comfortable.... But even then you still have to be extra cautious. It depends on the situation and my instincts.

If they are on your steps .. Don't roll down your window..if they are on the ground, don't roll down your window..
A person can cover 21 feet in about 1.5 seconds..is there ANYTHING in your trailer worth your life?
Stay in your truck, call the police if you feel it's necessary..
DO NOT get out of the truck or allow them inside.
There are ALOT of dangerous people out there -
Use the super power known as common sense. Did you do a quick walk around when you parked? Did you notice your trailer door hanging open? Did you notice a fuel leak? No? Then stay in the truck and tell the dude to bugger off.

21ft in about 1.5 seconds, I never thought about that. That's a lot ground to cover in that much time.
mje Thanks this. -
By "real stuff"... do you also mean robberies, falling for an easy trucker con, and gettin jumped by a few unfriendly strangers?
Not paranoid, but that stuff ALSO does happen, perhaps maybe even more than fuel leaks & en route opened trailer doors.
OP,
it kinda depends on the scenario and surroundings. But be assured I won't haplessly be so naive as to go to check on things without due caution.mustang970, DoneYourWay, mje and 1 other person Thank this. -
I've had that happen to me a couple of times. I told the guy I'm airing out the trailer or I have a road call coming to fix the fuel leak. I also keep an ice pick handy as a backup in case they try to get inside the truck.
DoneYourWay, mje and camaro68 Thank this.
