Would imagine that it is because there will be instances where you will be going into a port and NOT picking up a hazmat load. Like wise, it would be a bit silly to require to have a TWIC card to haul hazmat if you are never entering a port.

When you enter a port/refinery with a twic card, they swipe the card and then have you place your fingerprint on a little scanner and it checks your fingerprint against the one recorded on your twic. If it doesn't match you don't get in. The twic actually has all ten of your prints recorded on it.

I also have it came in handy, when I started delivering load to the Port in my state only 4 miles from my house, has made me thousands of dollars.

It's a requiremenT for transportation workers that enter facilities monitored by homeland security. You need them to get on the ports. Most import produce enters through ports and you need a twic to p/up loads delivering to supermarkets. If you have a passport takes about 2 wks. You do have to visit same port twice to get it. Once to sign up, one to pick up. Fingerprints required both times. Some ports will let you on to pick up. In Philly they charge you $40 escort fee, three escort fees and you cna pay for your card.

What makes you think that Hazmat is more or less than TWIC Card, it is conducted but the same orginazation.

You pay twice its all about the money.
I am told it is the same background check for Haz-Mat, TWIC and to buy a gun.
Go online and do the paperwork before going in for finger prints. It will save you a bunch of time.
Its just one more thing that makes you a bit above the rest when looking for work. Some ports will not allow the escort and will turn you away.

There are 10 states that don't participate in the TSA/Hazprints program, I have no idea how the HME works in those states but you're saying they use the same contractor the TSA uses? The TWIC program is supposed to be more universal but you can't get one in every state! I got mine in Houston--they had truck parking, a driver's dream!

It takes longer to get HM endorsement cause for HM one has to first go to website https://hazprints.tsa.dhs.gov/Public/ to enroll, then, take the HM test at a Dept of driver services in their state of residency, then go to a place for the fingerprinting and application (and if I remember it right, take a pic too), then wait weeks to get the approval letter from TSA via mail and then go back to dept of driver services with that letter in order to add that to the driver's license.... :biggrin_25521: To get the TWIC card all one has to do is to go to location and fill out application, fingerprint, take a picture and wait for the card in the mail and it may take 2 weeks or so... I applied for TWIC last week...
