DOT stopped me today told me he wasn't going to cite me for it but I need a class 3 flammable liquid sticker on the 110 gallon transfer tank on my truck as well as IFTA stickers. The IFTA sticker is easy enough but the flammable liquid sticker has me confused.

The way he was explaining it he made it sound like it's just a smaller version of a placard. Not 100% sure what he's talking about or where to get it.

I'm not carrying enough to make it a hazmat/placard load but was told I need a flammable liquid sticker on the tank. Anyone know exactly what he's talking about?

on tankers you still have residuals therefore you should be placarded if previous load was haz

I'm guessing the "OP" is running a p/u truck and has an additional tank in the box/behind the cab.

I guess they differentiate between manufacturer installed fuel tank(s) to operate the said vehicle and aftermarket tanks added on for storage, transfer, whatever, makes no difference if it's not stock fuel tanks for the vehicle. These are then based on size and if they can hold more then 1,000 lbs of a flammable liquid then that falls under the rules of a hazardous material container used for transport.

I've seen them labeled with smaller stickers but small or regular sizes use whatever works and I imagine a sticker has to be visible from any visible side of the tank?

But I'm not understanding the requirement per the cop. My understanding if it the hazmat is less then 1,000 lbs, placarding is not necessary and 110 gallons should not get there.

Portable tank requirement was lowered and snatched LTL / pickup/ hotshot drivers whom now need a hazmat endorsement. I don't follow that too close but heard the scuttle butt. Check the regs.

Use to be a hand with a one ton working for a hot shot could load 10 /55 gallon drums of bad stuff with no problem because the single 55 didn't meet the requirements under portable tanks.....

It's not a smaller version, get it at any truck stop. If the tank is too small then you need a placard holder.

Sounds to me like he was jacking with you......why did he stop you? The tank might have been his "PC" to get a better look at you...dunno.

There's 2 types of hazmat signage. The first one is the Placard. That's the one you see on the outside of the truck and trailer. The other (the one he is telling you about) is the shipping label and it is used on boxes or other shipping containers. I'm sure you have seen both of them and you can find those once you know what to look for. The book where it explains all this is the CFR49 parts 100 to 177. See Subpart D - Marking - to find why he is telling you to mark your package. See Subpart E Labeling - §172.400 for general labeling requirements. §172.419 Flammable Liquid label - is for the label you're looking for. See Subpart F Placarding §172.500 for Applicability of placarding requirements.

I was speeding then he went about inspecting the rest of my vehicle which was just fine other than he wanted to complain about lack of IFTA stickers and lack of labeling on my fuel tank. Guess you guys don't know what the hell this guy was talking about either. I've gotten a level 2 inspection elsewhere and passed with zero violations no IFTA sticker no hassle about the transfer tank.

I'm not here complaining about being stopped just want to run legal and I'm genuinely confused about what this guy wants from me. I got my boss to get me some IFTA stickers but I'm still confused about the tank labeling. 110 gallons does not make over 1,000lbs of fuel.

You nailed it. 2012 F350 dually with a 32' PJ gooseneck. Not for hire. Work for an electrical contractor that installs sports field lighting. Move around small equipment, augers, rebar cages, etc.

Never any hazmat loads as my additional fuel tank does not constitute a hazmat load.
