Age 63, in Northern ID, no longer able to work at throwing 50 lb. around, little experience and needing good income what do I turn to??? Chip truck? End or belly dump? (Towing doesn't seem to pay) Equipment rental places? Shouldn't I have more experience for wide loads? Boom truck (where to look) Special endorsement considerations (If so, is there an experience factor and , if so, how to get it)? OTR or (perish the thought) go back to Swift? (Being away from home was becoming a challenge to my marriage but might risk it if absolutely necessary)? Other?
Background:
Got my CDL-A at Swift Academy, Lewiston, Jul 07 (it was great), followed by 6-week mentor program (sucked) and then Wal-Mart dedicated solo (2Wks - good deal in general, dry vans & Reefer). Night driving in the rain along city streets and State Hwy exits resulted in high stress, late deliveries and glasses. - I was told that I couldn't get day-time only runs while waiting for the glasses, and that being late again would result in termination. Even after showing them at Swift my eye prescription, I was told that my problem wasn't with vision but inadequate pretrip planning. - Why continue doing the same thing, expecting different results? The risk was ending up terminated or, much worse having an accident and hurting someone. - Now, doctor just told me that I herniated an old surgery incision pulling triple rail chains in and out of side compartment (because there was no chain rack). Frustration over not getting a rack, not getting repairs for 4-way flashers, signal lights and side-view mirror control didn't help.
Long story short, quitting seemed the thing to do.
OK, some venting here; but, What are my options? The pros and cons? What would you do? Thanks.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

not trying to be smart, but sir - if I were in your situation (and age) I would be on social security and working part time as a security guard. why in the world would you want to continue driving a truck?
-
Maybe because he cannot pay his bills without more income than social security and a part-time job?

try to find a van company with little to no hand unload if you can't do the physical work. Vans are about as little labor as you will find.

Check out the temp services where you live.

We have a driver that is 75 years old and started driving in 1955. Do the math. He just had quintuple bypass surgery last year that cost over $800,000 in the end with all the surgery/hospital bills and recovery. Our company's insurance paid for the entire deal - with a $100 deductible. Our company has no maximum lifetime limit, if so, he would have been done a while back.
Pretty good reason to keep working if you can is to be able to have excellent medical coverage. Some people just plain like to work and retiring isn't ever on their agenda of things to do. -
what company is this?
