I've been a little shy to post this, mostly in the interest of forum decorum than anything else, but I have to wonder...
What do most drivers do to handle IBS or, say, midnight bathroom urges? I mean, if you're stopped at a truck stop it's presumably as simple as getting out of the truck and walking (running?) in to the restroom... but what if you're parked out at a parking lot or some such?

Well, there are somethings you just mainly have to decide what will work for you, but there are tools of the trade that are used like funnels, coke bottles, trash bags....but if you are a co-driver its harder to do, but solo you figure it out easy what works for you....or either you buy a "Port-a-Potty" they are more convenient....and don't cost that much either!
-
Don't use a Port-a-Potty, unless your IBS is that Bad, cause your Breth is going to smell like ####... In Most cases its how you can control what you eat that day and what type of Excercise you do. Instead of looking for a close spot up front of any Rest area or Truck stop, Park in Back - there is your walking excercise, and watch your Diet. But if you have a Bad case of IBS , and your nowhere near a Truck stop and OTR, and Have Dualies on tracker Squat between them and let go, No one will know what your doing on side of road....But make sure you are not facing Traffic....lol

A FUNNEL or COKE BOTTLE for IBS sufferers? ...I just had a horrible mental pic there!!!
-
well, after twice putting a trash can behind my cooler, sitting on the cooler with my back side hanging off, well you get the picture - I bought a "luggable loo" from the Sports Authority for about $15. it's essentially a 4.5 gallon bucket with a toilet shaped lid. I used it about 4 or 5 times and was GLAD it was available!!

Exercise and watching your diet-that's how I did it.

There are some really excellent port-a-potties out there now with sealable lids (so it doesn't smell until you get somewhere you can clean it). Do some looking and comparing and I'd get one if I were you, especially for in the dead of winter in a cold state or the heat of summer in a humid one - not pleasant to be outside for more than a couple minutes.
One of the best ways to manage irritable bowel is to keep your weight down, your exercise up and eat a good diet. My ex has it and, once he got down to a reasonable weight, most symptoms went away. He exercises an hour a day now and eats right and rarely has a problem any more.
Weight is one of the most important ones along with diet and exercise. -
I was just explaining on how to urinate in a bottle, but not for BM's and I agree with the way I wrote ityou must have gotten a real bad mental pic....sorry should have explained myself a little more.....lol

y'know, i find it a little interesting that i've had probably more women respond to my bathroom question than men... not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just well... like I said, forum decorum.
Thanks all for your explanations, this is pretty much what I figured, but couldn't find anything really in the way of advice thru the search engine, so I figured it had to be asked.
I'm not badly overweight (maybe by all of 15 lbs) and for the most part I try to eat healthy, but I don't cook and I don't care much for freezy-meals that taste like the cardboard box they came in.
But sometimes... let me tell you... there is just something that will set me off and I end up making more than a "healthy" number of trips to the can in a day, even if some are unproductive, the urge to move is still there and cannot be denied.
Once I'm OTR, I really don't want to stop for anything other than necessities, and well, this really counts as one, but I don't wish to stop 8 times in a day when things are 'acting up', y'know?
I reckon since I typically don't care for over the counter 'remedies', I've never tried to see what something like Pepto would do for me during those episodes... so maybe that's something I need to find out.
In other news, I am getting better exercise this year compared to last. Sitting at a desk these last 4 years has taken a toll on me, and if I hope to pass the DOT physical with flying colors, I'll need a few more months of daily workouts.
I hadn't thought about exercise (or lack thereof) being a contributing factor to IBS, and if the doctor said anything about it, I probably tuned it out (she's so pretty.. and single.. and hated talking about it with her).
I had another thread a while back about drivers getting regular exercise OTR, or more specifically if anyone knew of gyms which were trucker friendly and wouldn't call a tow rig if your truck was parked outside while you were inside. I honestly think if they'd let me park overnight, I might be more willing to stay at one of those big chain gyms each opportunity I had, if not because of the workout and shower, for the presumably quiet parking arrangement, lack of lot lizards, and reduced probability of a slashed tire, disabled refer, busted brake line, etc. -
By the way, stress is a HUGE factor in IBS. Sucks, eh?
I have Chrones, ex has IBS... he started WWIII last week... hope he's suffering like I am...
