I've never seen any of the Chicago scales open that I can remember, and I80 is my regular route back to Canada.

In Colorado it depends on the scale and the mood of the weigh master. I can tell you that if you bypass a New Mexico scale and they get your info, they will alert the neighboring states, and Colorado NB @ Trinidad (it is a combined scale) will turn off the pre-pass and watch for you. Watched it happed to a Crete driver a few years back, came down Raton, the 5 trucks ahead of me and all behind me were red lighted, I got pulled in for paperwork (brand new tractor). Crete truck came rolling in, she looked at his trailer number, hit the park light. Seems he ignored the exit sign for the portables New Mexico had NB at the summit of Raton. While I was standing there, she called the Raton scale and they were sending someone to have a talk with him.

That said, years ago I got one at Monument, I was following delivery instructions, it was 3 am and I was picking up a dropped trailer in a residential area behind the scale. Trooper on the other side saw me exit, saw me make my right turn, and chased me down. I explained to him, showed him my map and instructions. He gave me a warning and escorted me to the scale, where I got a 0 point, $265 ticket (which the company paid as it was their screw up), I do believe the fine has gone up though.

You know how sometimes you just can't tell if its open or not. Can You get a ticket from pulling through a closed scale? I've had a couple times where it was just hard to tell. I oiled see there being some law I don't know of. Maybe disregarding a traffic sign or something.

I passed an open scale on US 72 EB in MS once. The electronic sign was out and the metal sign said open. As soon as I passed the coop, I seen the DOT officer waving both of his arms inside the coop. I immediately stopped, and he hopped in the cruiser and came up to me and escorted me back west then east thru the scale and explained to me in MS its a 1200.00 fine and 10 points on license. He looked at me for a minute and asked do I think I ll ever run a scale again? I said No Sir, and he told me to have a good day

The funniest thing I ve seen, I was in the WB I 20 scale near Odessa getting a Level 1. And there was an James R Smith O/O would tried to run the service road behind the scales. Then the DOT officer slowly walked over to the service road, stop the driver, and asked him " What do you think you re doing?" then I hear the DOT officer say " Give me your logbook, BOLs, Permit Book, and Medical Card. You re going to go down the road, get back on I 20 east, go to the next exit 20 miles away, and then come back I 20 westbound into the scale and I m going to have you a $500 ticket, a level 1, and anything else we find wrong"
