So the rumor that with UPS you have to work in the warehouse FIRST, then work your way up to a CDL truck after 6 months - 1 year (unless you know someone) is FALSE....correct? Clarify with comments if needed.

depends on loacation - as far as I know in cincy - ups sharonville and ups downtown shuttles wotrk from the dock - and fill permanent positions from within...
they are "package" I am LTL - and all LTL union companies (YRC/ABF) in my area hire new drivers - right out of school and from the street.
ups package in cincy are harder to get because of the list of temps - we do not use causual or temps so it is much easier to hire on direct. -
I did casual for Yellow back in '94 after I came off the road from doing OTR. They road tested me and sent me off to Detroit for the physical from Hell. I went there fully expecting to be covering for city drivers who were on vacation, etc... didn't happen that way.
I ended up working on an open air dock in the middle of a very cold Michigan winter. Not my idea of fun. It paid well--$14 an hour, when they called me in. But in the end, it didn't look like there was much chance of going full-time, not to mention the fact that the old-timers there treated me like a red-headed stepchild. The last time they called, I told 'em I already had another job... but thanks anyway. -
temps and casuals get abused... - we go thru a lot of guys like that on the dock - but the ones willing to stick it out make it thru that gauntlet and it works into a decent job...
When Yellow bought us (Roadway) the changes were more in our management than in our actual methods... Some were good - some were not - all were difficult. -
it was reported that yellow didnt make as much last year and they are saying there going to close terminals and lay off drivers???????
-
first any of us had heard of it...
YRC made hundreds of millions in net profit last year - and held their market share...
we own our locations and equipment and do not operate on debt...
pretty solid if you ask me. -
Unions seem to be the way to go. However, it's #### near impossible to get on with these places. I'd love to work for Yellow or ABF, but none are ever hiring!
-
we hire several times a year.... I like many walked in with no referal and filled out an ap and started working that week.
lots of myth and legend about these jobs and what was true 30 years ago - is not the case nowadays.
how far from Harrisburg are you? or akron? -
I just wonder why Yellow's trucks are orange. lol
-
yellow was part of the yellow conglom (including yellow cab)...
when they broke away part of the legal agreement was that they would change the hue of their trucks.
