I never had the opportunity to drive a Super 10, someone once told me it was like half an 18, splitter in all gears but no range selector.
I think it would be fine with the engine in the truck now, if you didn't want to split gears, it isn't that big a deal.
The automatic top 2 models were troublesome, the first Automated shifting or close if it wasn't the first, and I guess there are other versions with differing gear numbers with the top gears automated.
A friend who drove truck far longer than I have hated driving a Super 10 but he never had much experience with one, either
Low isn't as low as a straight 10 is one other possible disadvantage.
10 speed vs 13 speed????

If you haul heavier loads a lot or run hills the 13 is better in my opinion. With a 10 and the newer low rpm engines, the ratio difference between 9 and 10 makes a rpm drop to below the power band. With the 13 you can keep the engine in the power band a lot easier just by flipping the switch and bumping the throttle.
Big Duker Thanks this. -
More hp less gears. Less hp more gears. 13sp,600hp,3:70 rearends.
yeah that can haul some freight.

I drove a Super 10 for 11 years. Loved it!!
To the OP, 13 is the only way to go. -
Completely personal preference, but I wouldn't even consider a 10 speed.

10 speeds don't have low, just 1-10 but I get what your saying and I agree since I have driven both. 1st in a super10 seems to be a higher gear then 1st in a straight 10.
I would go with 13 or 18. I would never even consider a 10, if you like a 9 then get a 13 or 18 and drive it like a 9 until your in the hills and need to split up or down. This is my preference and have been in a couple situations where an 18 speed would have been handy, being able to split up into 4th over so that way the gap going into 5th direct on the high side of the range selector is closer. That can really lug you down if your heavy and starting on a hill. -
Y'all are making me want a 13-speed in our next truck!

13/18 speeds are the way to go, that splitter comes in handy.

i drove the super 10. and hated it. my first local job was mack dump trucks. all super 10. it's basically a 5 speed with a splitter. and that splitter can be in ANY position on the knob. really sucked when the truck had it on the right side of the knob. cuz your hand is basically wrapped the knob. so the splitter sits in the area of your hand. real PITA. if it was on the left side. then you could use your thumb and finger to flip back and forth.
not to mention those transmission are just flat out junk also. poor quality and reliabilty.
the last truck i drove. was basically a 15 second wait time between splits. really sucked when you needed to grab a gear climbing hills. and if you tried to speed up the process. you ended up cluncking the rear end. every 3 months the truck gets a used rear end. that super 10 really smashes the pinion gears and breaks up the teeth.
