Hi, does anyone here drive Highway 5 in BC? Coquihalla?
I drive a 2004 Int 9900, with a c15 475, I literally have to crawl down Mine Hill, Zopikos, Helmer, or any hill for that matter in 2nd or 3rd gear.
I only usually have a container with wood pellets weighing in at 26500 KG, I have super b's loaded at 62500 KG blowing by me and they apparently cruise down in 7th without having to even touch the brakes..
I told my boss this and he insists that Cat motor jakes arent as "good" as other motors
Something about this doesnt sound right, do you think he is being cheap in not wanting to pull the top of the motor apart and readjust the jakes?
If something isn't done before the snow falls, I will be looking for a new truck with a new company but I wanted to get some expert advice first!

I'll bet the guys with the "Super B's" blowing by you are "out of control" and couldn't come to a controlled stop if they had to. Have you tried running up a gear>can you control the speed with the Jake. Lots of times I will use the 3 stages of the Jake to control my speed as sometimes a full 3 stage Jake is too much braking.
You boss is somewhat right. CAT engines aren't the best working with a Jake brake BUT they are better than old Mack Econodynes.Speedloader Thanks this. -
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that, When i first got in the truck and did my first run I noticed only the 3rd stage worked, my boss told me its the only one I will ever need..
Even in 2nd I have to do a little braking... It's so bad that cars on Highway 3 will honk and give me the finger because I'm going too slow down these hills and it's only single lane...
I also turn the fan override on and it holds me back a little bit extra but It's almost as if the jakes are just making noise at this point unless you are doing literally 15km/hr
And yes, if i try it in 3rd the rpms will just rise and i will have to constantly brake... 2nd is the only gear that will somewhat hold me back.... -

Who do you work for. Sounds familiar LOL but yes, cat's aren't as good. Go your pace and screw the other traffic.. Pull over if they really start piling up.

Something doesn't sound right, at what RPM do you start applying the brakes?

Sometimes 1800, 1900 even
