How long does it take to do the actual pressure test on a head? Mines in the shop for a blown head gasket.

CAT doesn't do head pressure testing. They usually have the head decked and checked for cracks in side of the exhaust and intake ports. They also should check the valves for stem wear. If the truck has a lot of miles it is better money to get a REMAN CYL head. This way you get a warranty. You don't say what kind of CAT engine but they normally leak because of the head bolts stretching or if it is a 3406E and has a aluminum spacer plate the compression has a tendency to a problem just because of the aluminum compressing. Almost all of the CAT engines fared well with the steel spacer plates. if the block is etched because of the head gasket leaking it may need to have that cylinder removed and the deck cut for a shim.

I have a C 15 with 625k on it. They found five cracks. I dont abuse my truck, I keep a strict maintenence schedule. Ive never had this happen before. Only put 50k on since I bought it. Fortunately I bought the extended NTP warranty, it will cover all but the water pump. We are trying to get the pump covered as premature failure because the corrosives leaked in the coolant from the gasket and head failure. Still waiting for the verdict on it. Had to replace all my hoses, including the apu hoses. They were brittle from the corrosives.

Think he's talking about the exhaust gases.

I rebuilt a lot of CAT engines for head gasket failures, and never had to take into consideration damage from exhaust gases getting into the cooling system. The problem from head gasket failures is compression getting past the head gasket seals.
