Also, if they have any benefits package, this time in, can and should go towards that as well.

It is still a rotten economy out there, but a job can be found/had, but an awful lot of shoe leather will be needed. As always, dress neatly, clean shaved, and talk clear, look the person square into the eyes, and keep a good attitude about yourself.

I really appreciate the information! I'm going to be working for FFE transportation as soon as I graduate from the academy. =D
By the way thanks for defending me a lot of guys on here keep saying I'm too young and 'stupid' to get in with a good company.
I'm planning on staying with FFE the 1-year contract then applying for Poly-Trucking which starts out at .48cpm! I'm setting my sights on them for now at least.

Con-Way freight, and ABF both have truck driving schools. Its easier to get into CWF but ABF is better down the long road. I believe YRC (old yellow frieght and roadway express) is starting their own school soon too. It doesnt hurt to apply, or even apply as a dock worker and they will move you to a driving position

Best bet is to drive a concrete truck. OR a school bus. Both require a CDL and will have you home every night. Most school bus companies train you and you will take the cdl test in their bus. If you are comfortable driving a combination then you could take the cdl test in a truck from CDL help, just google them. I went through a local cdl mill in Dallas, International School of Truck Driving. I know there may be some grants available.

They, as with most of the training school offer job placement. I know, from attending, they do a lot with CRST. You could apply with CRST and get trained in Dallas. The best part with this option is CRST only has a 8 month commitment after school, unlike some of the others!

I got into a program once at a community college for truck driver training, because I was unemployed. Everything was all set up until I got two jobs in one day, and that sort of put a damper on all of that. But that would be a place to start. Good luck.....

As one fellow wrote you can see if you can get on at dock work with one of the LTL companies, such as ABF or YRC or any or the other ones, but also, if that fails and you don't mind doing construction you can google the various construction unions. Sheet Metal Workers International Association, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and son on, all of the construction unions have apprenticeship programs. I did sheet metal work until I retired, and many times worked the docks, and made a good living and retirement. Good luck to you and God bless.

They're gonna start you off as a package handler for about 8 or 9 bucks an hour, but if you do a good job for them and let them know you're serious about driving...it may take a few years but its one of the best paying jobs on the road. And they would train you.

i guess i will quote this again. This is the route i would go if i was 21 again. However i would stay in a Parcel truck. Screw the CDL, doubles /triples endorsements, Hazmat crap etc. Go ask your local UPS driver what he makes after 8 hrs. on the clock.
