per diem practical is 29 cents a mile. non per diem hhg is 36 cents a mile. you run 100,000 miles in a year that is 7,000 dollars. Can u make that up with the bonus and extra week vacation. That is the biggie question. Only if u get the safety bonus and average 2500 miles is the answer.

To the OP,
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A BASE LINE EXAMPLE. I did not include any extra incentives the company provides for any of the different pay charts. I.E. There is not safety bonus factored into my example nor stop pay or anything else. This is just straight pay. Also I did not take out for insurance or any other deductable the company might have.
I do not drive (yet) however depending on your situation I would advise not taking per diem. Here is why.
Average 2500 miles a week with Practical route per diem:
You get .29 per mile of that .29 per mile only .19 is taxed
that equals $475 after taxes say .28% you would get paid
$342 now add in the .10 non taxed miles of $250
for a total of: $592 for the week.
Same thing for non Per diem with Practical miles of .34 per mile
2500 miles at .34 equals $850 after taxes say .28% you would get paid
$612 for the week.
Now mind you if you keep all of your receipts and itemize at the end of the year you would be able to claim $237.5 for your own per diem for the week of 5 days. Heck if you were say on the road for 25 days for a month with the same average you would be able to claim $1187.50 in per diem for the month (or there about)
If you want to look at big picture for a year. with Per diem as described above you would make $28,416. Without per diem for the year you would make $29,376. So taking per diem you would actually loose $960 over the course of a year. Now that is not with the safety bonus or any other extra pay.
With a typical claiming 0 on your taxes for dependents you would probably get more back from the IRS not taking per diem.

PB you are correct. That is why I said I didn't factor in the safety bonus or anything else. Cause I was giving a base line example. One week you could make safety bonus the next week maybe not. Things happen... I'll edit my initial post to state this is a base line example.

Hi all truckers. I start mti in october at millis. Just one question. I dont know which pay scale to use so I have one question. Lets say I have a minor accident, knock a mirror off or something, how does that affect a safety bonus on per diem pay. Do you lose it for a year, a quarter, or week?

I'm thinking you'll lose your quarterly bonus and what ever that don't cover will be taken off your next till its covered

It depends on when you knock the mirror off. If you knock it off in training you may not have to worry about what pay scale to use. Good luck and for Gods sake watch those mirrors. -
