I really do get what you are saying.. and myself, and I am certain many, many others as well wish it was different or better.. however, where you lose me.. is that through all my experiences I have learned that this in the game.. and not just in the trucking industry.. it is in every industry... Even, dog grooming.. is true..
I have a friend who wanted to become a dog groomer... She researched and found a couple schools, but could not afford them... Then, she found a national pet compan offers grooming services in their shops and also offered a program for those
Wanting to become groomers... They have a in-house school and training program free if you groom for them for a year after completing training... If you quit before the year you owe the balance for the school and training...
Well, she did it and hated it.. she was used mostly as a bathed and kennel cleaner for groomers who went through an outside school or who the shop favored.. was paid far less and had to work all the crappy shifts..
What I hear and see on this forum and others is experienced drivers warning newbies to choose wisely.. and do your time till you have better opportunity... I see a lot of newbies think they are to smart to make the bad choices and they will be the ones to work the lease program the right way..
I am not saying that the company you worked for did no wrong...and I am not saying it Is right...
accredited school mandatory?

No doubt the same game goes on in other industries - I'm sure it does. I am only here to speak of the trucking industry, which is in no way meant to say that this industry is the only one with the nonsense anomalies.
IF the company will let you do your time that is. As I said, some make it, some don't. Many of those who do not make it fail through unfair things. I mentioned some of this (which was off topic) here. I will post a new thread in detail at a later date. I am a long distance cyclist and have a multi-day ride coming up. I'll do the thread in a couple of weeks or so.mje Thanks this. -
Is there any documentation to back up this claim? $5,000.00 - $15,000.00 subsidy? no benchmark to meet per say? Just get the person to orientation and collect the money??
Not that I don't believe you. If verifiable, I too would like to point out to others the absurdity of the program...mje Thanks this. -
Not that I accuse you of not reading or keeping up with the news, but you never heard of employers (especially big corporations) getting a Federal Subsidy as an incentive to create jobs? It's not just the Trucking Industry. Our wonderful Federal Government bails out big corporations as well as the banks, but does almost nothing for the little guy even as the banks and corporations abuse the bailout.
The fact that employers (such as the Trucking Industry) receive a subsidy is old news, though I will say that it is not something I knew of either when I went into the industry, so maybe I should not have asked you if you ever heard of corporations getting the hiring incentive (subsidy dollars)
. When I heard the scuttlebutt about it, I checked it out, and saw that what I heard was true. Why the wide range of how much is received per new hire is something I do not know. Dependant on the company?

I am sorry I did not save any links to the few sources I went to. I'll see what I can find that may be still online or more recently posted (assuming you will be un-successful with a search yourself).

The subsidy is not something employers will freely advertise or brag about.

As for how it's received, last I knew, all an employer had to do was prove each hire. When you get to orientation, you're pretty much hired unless you really foul up, and when you are training, you're definitely hired. I saw NO regulation on the subsidies such as retaining a new hire for a minimum amount of time, just that documentation be submitted by a company that there was a new hire.

One would think the Trucking Industry (and others) receives the sibsidy to aid in training expenses and tuition reimbursement. My opinion is the program is being abused and taken advantage of in a bad economy.

The Government puts something into place without enough regulation. The corporations take advantage of that. The Government ignores it, which contributes to the further fouling up of this country. The employee loses.
mje Thanks this. -
So clear something up for you... You do not want to work or be involved with the trucking industry.. you just want to shed light on the corruptiod BS that drivers, especially New Drivers go through... Right..
mje Thanks this. -
????????? Wrong. I want to do what I trained to do without being set up to fail because follow a book that I nor the Trucking Industry wrote. Yes, I do want to shed light on things I and others have experienced in the industry.
Would it make a difference whether or not I still wanted to drive? Hopefully the inquiry is not rhetorical or malicious. Sometimes I do not take things as they are intended to be, especially when it's only in black and white on a screen and not speaking to someone directly.mje Thanks this. -
No, I am certainly not being malicious or anything.. for, that is not who I am.. and two, it would serve no purpose.. I have notbi g to gain by being malicious or anything to you or anyone on this or other forums..
I truly was unclear of where you wanted to go.. I will admit, I am only consciously aware of you through this thread.. so, I don't know if you have posted else's where.. or if I just do.t remember.. so, following this thread I could not tell where the energy and focus was going...
I do think there are many people like you and I that had our first attempt to become driver's go wrong... I k.ow for me the reason why it has been three years off the road.. was I needed to regroup.. work through some things.. and take
what I learned and make a solid game plan towards a better and more successful entry this time.. which is where I am at now...mje Thanks this. -
That's cool. Just making sure it was not leading up to anything. I have been on other forums where I've been attacked for telling it like it was (as I myself experienced), so I am a little gunshy sometimes.
I truly wish you luck this time around. Me? I have to almost start all over again because of time passed.
Just now, posting of my experience (leaving nothing out or adding or inflating anything) is the only way I can vindicate. I was going to use my real name here and not hide behind a screen name because I stand by what I say. But others I do not want to deal with again from other forums go elsewhere too. Those who done me wrong made a bad enemy of me because I am not afraid to tell all, and it matters not to me if I do not get a job in the industry because of it even though I would like to drive. Like I said, I can make as much as a new driver being a cabbie in New York or Philadelphia or other big city.mje Thanks this. -
Wow.. cabbie in NY.. that is a job that would go e you stories.. of course I am from the Midwest were a traffic jam is when we have to go 10mph under the speed limit.. I truly did not know what a real traffic jam was until I was out on the road..
While I had traveled and done road trips it was by car or motorcycle.. so not the same...
While it is discouraging to have to pretty much start all over.. this time I am.more ahead of the game.. for one, I do have my CDL A and all the endorsements... So, I don't have to go through school again.. more than likely will need a refresher and training.. but, at least I don't have to do the schooling part.. there are plenty of companies that I am checking out.. and so far have a couple that will take me.. but, I am not rushing in this time.. told them I am checking a couple other companies... I do think that this time around I am thinking through my choices much more than my first go round.. which, I do believe ill be better in the long run..
I would think since you have your CDL as well that you don't have to do the school thing either and just do the refresher, training and time in the seat..mje Thanks this. -
LoL. Thanks for not accusing me of not keeping up with industry news. I got my CDL in '92... I've heard a few rumors in my time.
I may have heard some talk of subsidies. what I have not heard is specifics that you posted:
Pretty specific "information" wouldn't you say? All I asked for was a link...

Yes, please post if you find something.

mje Thanks this.
